Chinese Reading and Writing

Chinese reading and writing is the slow half of Mandarin: characters, graded texts, and the decision to handwrite or type. Conversation courses often postpone it. University courses and HSK reading papers will not. This page helps you add literacy without pretending a calligraphy afternoon did the job, and without confusing simplified characters in the mainland with traditional characters in a place like Taipei.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail does not sell a character course or a handwriting certificate. A school’s conversation-heavy intensive will not become a reading program because you wished it would. Ask for the character count and the texts.

Two skillsReading and handwriting are different. Many people recognize a character they cannot write. Typing is a third skill.
ScriptMainland classes use simplified characters. LTL tags Taipei for traditional Chinese. Pick one production script for the month.
Intensive gapThat’s Mandarin says its intensive group favors listening and speaking over reading and writing. Add a reading stream if literacy is the goal.
CLI splitTheir immersion assigns one of three teachers to reading and writing. The hours exist because they scheduled them.
VolumeGoEast’s stages list hundreds of words each. Literacy is volume plus review, not a single radical poster.
HSKThe written exam leans on reading and, at some levels, writing. CLI says it does not capture spoken ease. The reverse is also true: speech does not pass the paper.
HeritageFluent speakers who cannot read need this page more than another conversation month.
CalligraphyA craft workshop. Not a literacy plan. See the culture page.

Why Reading Falls Behind

Speaking rewards you in public. Reading rewards you in private, later. Students and schools follow the reward. That’s Mandarin’s intensive page is honest that the group is about listening and speaking. Buy that product for the street. Do not buy it as your only product if the goal is a text. CLI prevents the drift by giving reading and writing a named teacher inside the same day. You can copy the structure without buying the whole Guilin week: several speaking hours, plus dedicated character hours, with different tasks. A single “comprehensive” hour usually becomes chat, because chat is easier to sell.

GoEast’s published ladder shows the volume. Beginning, elementary, and intermediate stages list 630, 721, and 1,140 words, with grammar counts beside them. Those are course-design numbers, not the official HSK list we failed to download from chinesetest.cn. They are large enough to end the fantasy that literacy is a side worksheet. If your course cannot say how many characters this week includes, it does not have a reading plan.

Simplified, Traditional, and Handwriting

Mainland schools teach simplified characters. LTL’s city index marks Taipei for traditional characters and lists it next to mainland cities. A learner with family literacy in traditional script should say so. You can learn to read simplified while you keep traditional for family texts, but writing both fluently in one intensive month is a poor plan. Choose the script you must produce. Recognition of the other can be a later layer.

Handwriting and typing diverge quickly. HSK, at levels that require writing, may still expect your hand; GoEast’s prep page mentions handwriting where the exam requires it. Daily life in China often expects you to type on a phone. Practice both if you need both, and do not let typing convince you that you can write. A teacher who only drills stroke order and never gives you a paragraph has the opposite fault. You need new characters in a text, not only in a grid.

A Method That Survives Contact with a Class

Use graded readers and your textbook’s texts, read aloud, and write a few sentences by hand every day. Review yesterday’s characters before you add today’s. A stack of new characters without review is how lists die. Heritage speakers should start from a diagnostic text, not from lesson one of a beginner book, unless the diagnostic shows they need lesson one. The heritage page is about that placement. Beginners should keep the first character count small enough to write from memory at the end of the week. The beginner page’s warning stands: twenty characters you own beat two hundred you have seen.

Ask the teacher to correct sentences, not only dictation. A perfect grid of characters and a broken sentence is half a skill. University language programs often do this correction because they have a writing course. Private schools do it when you insist. Insist.

Reading for HSK and Reading for Life

The written HSK is a reason to practice reading under a timer. It is a bad reason to read nothing else. Prep courses, with the hour conflicts noted on the HSK page, train question types. A newspaper, a lease, or a textbook chapter trains stamina. If you need the score, add mocks in the last month. If you only need the lease, skip the exam and read leases. CLI’s character counts for HSK levels are their FAQ’s account of the system. Verify the current list with the test operator before you memorize a quota.

Medical, business, and trade reading are specialist layers. They assume general literacy. Do not start with a contract if you cannot read a menu. The specialist pages assume you will not.

Tools and What They Do Not Do

Pleco-style dictionaries and stroke-order animations are useful and widely used; this page is not endorsing a product or requiring a purchase. A dictionary that you invoke for every character is a reading prosthetic. Wean it. A pen and a cheap notebook still work for memory in a way a highlight in an app does not, for many learners. Test that on yourself for two weeks rather than buying a system.

Online classes can teach reading. The teacher needs to see your handwriting on a camera or a scanned page. GoEast’s portal and That’s Mandarin’s digital notes store their materials. Your writing has to travel back to them or it is not a writing course. Say that when you book.

Add Literacy to a Plan You Already Have

If you are buying an intensive speaking month, add a reading hour or a daily quota in writing. If you are a heritage speaker, start with a diagnostic text. If you are a beginner, keep characters inside the first month but do not let them drown the tones. If you need HSK writing, add timed practice near the date, not instead of the year’s reading.

Request Guidance if a brochure will not tell you the character load. That silence is the answer: it is a speaking course. Find a Suitable Program if the literacy goal is really a university language year, which has its own writing classes and its own admission.

Schedule the Page, Because Conversation Class Will Not

That’s Mandarin’s intensive page says speaking leads and reading and writing are not the center. If your goal is the newspaper, that product needs a supplement. GoEast’s level map publishes vocabulary counts — 630, 721, and 1,140 words across the first three stages — and those counts are not a character-writing syllabus. CLI’s FAQ gives character counts it attributes to HSK 1 through 6 (150, 300, 600, 1,200, 2,500, 5,000) and says the exam was revamped in March 2022. Attribute those numbers to CLI’s FAQ. chinesetest.cn did not hand us the official list on the day we opened it. A school completion certificate does not state how many characters you can write from memory.

Simplified characters (简体字) are the mainland default. LTL’s Taipei listing is a traditional-character environment. Say which script you need before the textbook arrives. Typing and handwriting are different skills. A course that lets you tap pinyin into a phone can leave you unable to write the same word on a form. Ask whether the class includes dictation, and how often. Private hours are the practical way to add that work: GoEast’s private rate starts at USD 29 a class hour online, and That’s Mandarin’s older prices page lists private from 192 RMB a class. Point those hours at a text you chose, not at another speaking game.

Pace is honesty. CLI’s students on full-time one-to-one are the ones in the three-to-four-month HSK 3 remark. A part-time reader adding a few characters a day should not borrow that clock. Bring a page you can already read aloud and a page you can only scan. The course is the distance between them. DragonTrail does not sell a literacy program, a dictionary, or an HSK word list of its own.

FAQ

Can I become literate from a conversation course?

Not well. That’s Mandarin tells you the intensive group is not centered on reading and writing. CLI gives reading its own teacher because it does not happen by accident. Add the hours or change the product.

How many characters should I learn a week?

A number you can write from memory on Friday. Beginners should keep that number small. GoEast’s stage totals show that hundreds of words are a stage, not a weekend. Your teacher should set the week’s list. A list you cannot review is too long.

Simplified or traditional?

Simplified for mainland study and for most HSK preparation. Traditional if your life and reading are in Hong Kong or Taiwan, including LTL’s Taipei tag. Do not try to write both at full speed in the first month.

Is calligraphy the same as writing class?

No. Calligraphy is an art hour. Writing class is characters in sentences, corrected. Take calligraphy if you like it. Do not list it as literacy.

I speak well and read poorly. What do I buy?

A reading and writing block, possibly private, plus only as much conversation class as you still want. A heritage speaker in another speaking-heavy intensive will enjoy the month and leave with the same gap.

Will typing on my phone replace handwriting?

It replaces handwriting in chat. It does not replace it on an exam that wants a pen, and it hides characters you only half know because the phone suggests them. Practice the skill you will be asked to show.

Does HSK 1 reading require a year in China?

No. Early written levels are small and can be prepared anywhere. Higher levels need the volume GoEast’s ladder hints at and the stamina of real texts. A stay helps if you also read while you are there. A stay of pure conversation will not.

Does DragonTrail publish a character list?

No. Use the school’s list or the current official HSK list from the test operator. We will not invent a canon. We can help you notice when a course has no list at all.
