Small Group Chinese Courses
A small-group Chinese course puts a handful of students with one teacher so you speak more than you would in a university lecture and pay less than you would for a private hour. The word “small” only means something when you know the cap, the average, and the rule if nobody else enrolls at your level. This page compares the caps schools published on 29 October 2026.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not run groups and cannot promise that a group at your level will open in a given city. Caps below are the schools’ published maximums, not a count of students we have placed.
At a Glance
| LTL Beijing | Average 3, maximum 6, from USD 387 a week on the Beijing page. |
|---|---|
| That’s Mandarin intensive | Average 4–5, maximum 6, twenty classes a week, from 104 RMB a class on the intensive page. |
| That’s Mandarin part-time | Up to 8 students, two days a week, from 110 RMB a class on the 2020-headed prices page. |
| GoEast online | Average 2, maximum 4, 75-minute sessions, twice a week, USD 1,152 for 16 weeks plus USD 99 materials. |
| CLI option | Their core product is one-to-one. The FAQ mentions an optional small group of a few students as a choice, not the default week. |
| Level mix | A group only works if the other students are near your level. Ask how wide the band is. |
| If it does not fill | Get the minimum size and the price if you are moved into private lessons. |
| Cities | Groups are a local fact. A full beginner group in 上海 does not create one in 成都. |
| DragonTrail | No group roster and no “average class size” of our own. |
Why People Choose a Group
A group gives you other voices, a reason to prepare, and a lower price per hour. LTL prices the Beijing group week from USD 387 against USD 774 for one-to-one. That’s Mandarin’s intensive class starts at 104 RMB on the current intensive page, against 192 RMB for private on the older prices page. GoEast’s 16-week online group is USD 1,152 plus materials, against private hours from USD 29. The saving is real on the pages. It disappears if you spend the hour waiting for a classmate to finish a dialogue you already know, or if you cannot follow at all.
Speaking time is the point of a small cap. GoEast says the average online group is two students so that you talk in every lesson, and that class time is mostly speaking. That’s Mandarin caps the intensive room at six so the teacher can still correct you. A cap of six with an average of three, which is LTL’s Beijing line, is a different room from a cap of eight on That’s Mandarin’s part-time prices. Ask which number is on your contract.
The Level Band Inside the Room
Schools say groups are “similar levels.” Similar is a judgment. A beginner who knows pinyin and a beginner who cannot hear a tone are a hard pair. A heritage speaker who chats at dinner and cannot write is not an intermediate textbook student. GoEast says it will place you in a group after a trial, from beginner through intermediate on the group product, and that higher bands move to private lessons. That’s Mandarin’s intensive FAQ says the curriculum follows the HSK level system and that a month completes one of their levels. If you join mid-level, ask whether you enter on a start date only. Their 2026 list is monthly, which implies you do not stroll in on a Wednesday.
CLI’s default is not a group at all. Their FAQ describes optional group time of a few students beside the twenty one-to-one hours. If you want classmates, say so. If you want silence and a single teacher, do not pay for a group product and then feel cheated when someone else is in the room. The product name is the contract.
When the Group Does Not Fill
This is the clause that matters more than the average. That’s Mandarin says demand is high and that eight spots a month per level per city is the intensive limit they publish. High demand and an empty advanced group can both be true. LTL’s city pages do not, in what we read, state a minimum. GoEast’s online groups have a next start date on the page we fetched (5 May 2026) and a maximum of four. Ask: if only one student pays, do you still run, do you postpone, or do you convert to private at which price? Get the answer before the deposit. CLI’s deposit rule — USD 300, seat not held until it arrives — is a different school’s clause. Do not paste it onto LTL.
Also ask what happens when someone drops in week two. A group of six that becomes a group of two is often a better class. A price that rises because the school re-labels it “private” is a surprise. The fair versions are written down: either the price stays, or you may leave.
Where Groups Are Easier to Find
Groups need a flow of students at the same level. Large campuses in 北京 and 上海 are where schools list the most products. That’s Mandarin also names 苏州, 杭州, and 成都 for the same intensive format. LTL adds 承德, 北海, 西安, 昆明, and others, with discount tags that are theirs. A smaller city can be a better place to hear Mandarin after class and a worse place to find five beginners in March. CLI’s bet is Guilin and a private timetable so the group problem does not arise. Choose the failure mode you prefer: a group that might not form, or a private hour you will certainly pay for.
Online groups remove the city and keep the clock. GoEast’s sixteen-week group meets twice a week for 75 minutes, on weekdays or as a weekend pair, with timezone bands from Beijing morning to US evening on that page. You can live anywhere. You cannot pretend the group is a student visa. It is a remote class.
Housing and the Other Students
Classmates are not roommates unless you choose that. That’s Mandarin’s shared apartment is a private room with flatmates, meals not included, aimed at four weeks or more. A homestay is a family, not the group. LTL says about 80 percent of Beijing students choose homestay and that you cannot book the homestay without the course. Living with the group can help or it can mean you speak English in the kitchen. If Mandarin after class is the reason you came, say that you want a homestay or a local flatmate, and accept that the school may not control who is free that month.
Budget the week as course plus bed plus food. A group week at USD 387 in Beijing plus a homestay from USD 412 is already about USD 800 before meals the homestay does not cover, flights, and visa fees. CLI’s bundle hides the bed inside a higher headline. Put both shapes in a spreadsheet before you call one school expensive.
How to Choose a Group Without a Roster
You will not see the other students’ names, and you should not be promised a particular nationality mix. Ask for the level band, the start date, the cap, the minimum, the minutes, and the city. Visit a class if you are already in the city. A trial, where a school offers one, is a better test than a brochure photo of a full table.
DragonTrail will not invent a roster to make the page look bookable. If you have two offers, Request Guidance and send both. If you are still choosing the shape of the week, start at Learn Mandarin in China and then Find a Suitable Program. The group starts when that school says the room is open.
What To Ask If the Group Is Not Full
A small group is a bet that other people at your level want the same city and the same mornings. LTL’s Beijing page caps groups at six and says the average is three. That’s Mandarin’s intensive page caps groups at six and says the average is four or five, with a claim of eight spots per level, per city, per month. GoEast’s online groups cap at four and average two. None of those averages is a promise that your week will match the brochure. Ask, in writing, what happens on Monday if two people have paid and the cap is six: does the school run the class, merge you with a neighboring level, switch you to private lessons at a new price, or refund the difference.
Also ask whether “full” is counted on the first day or on the day you paid the deposit. CLI’s FAQ says a seat is not held until the USD 300 deposit arrives, and the balance is due three weeks before the start. A group that looked full in email can thin out when deposits slip. If the school’s answer is “we will see,” you are the one holding the risk. Private lessons (一对一) are the honest fallback, and they cost more. The small-group page exists so you price that fallback before you book a flight around a class that may not form.

FAQ
What is the difference between a small group and an intensive course?
Intensive describes the weekly hours. Small group describes the headcount. That’s Mandarin’s intensive product is both: twenty classes a week and a cap of six. A part-time group of up to eight, two days a week, is small on their prices page and is not intensive. Buy the hours and the cap, not the adjective.
Is a class of six still small?
It is small next to a university language class of twenty or thirty. It is large next to GoEast’s online cap of four or an average of two. In a class of six you will wait. In a class of two you will not hide. Pick the one your concentration can use.
Can I join a group after it has started?
Only if the school allows it. Monthly intensive starts, such as That’s Mandarin’s 2026 list, are designed as level blocks. A late joiner slows the room. Private lessons are the usual door if you missed the Monday.
Do groups mix complete beginners with HSK 3 students?
They should not. Every school cited here talks about levels or similar levels. Ask how they test, and what they do if the only open group is a level above you. Dropping into a harder room to “catch up” wastes the week.
Are online groups the same as a group in China?
The cap can be similar. The life is not. An online group does not put you in a city, does not include a bed, and does not answer the visa question. It is a good format before you travel or after you leave. Read the online page for that job.
Will I be moved to private lessons if I am the only student?
You might, and the price might change. The pages we read do not give one industry rule. That’s Mandarin’s scarcity line and LTL’s silence on minimums are why you ask in writing. Do not assume the group price survives a class of one.
Does the group price include books?
LTL says books and materials are included and that there are no hidden fees, on the Beijing page. GoEast adds USD 99 for materials on the online group. That’s Mandarin says a paperback textbook and digital notes are part of the intensive experience. Confirm the line on your invoice rather than borrowing another school’s sentence.
Can DragonTrail reserve a seat in next month’s group?
No. We do not hold That’s Mandarin’s eight spots or anyone else’s. Contact with the school, or a guidance conversation with us, is not a reservation until that school says the deposit rules are met.
