Part-Time Chinese Courses

A part-time Chinese course is a few taught sessions a week, built for someone who already has a job, a degree program, or a family schedule in the city. It will not move you through a level as fast as a morning intensive, and it is usually the wrong product if your main goal is a student-visa letter. This page separates those uses with the schedules schools published on 29 October 2026.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail has no part-time class list and no visa service. A part-time price from a 2020-headed page is not a current invoice until the school says it is.

GoEast onlineTwo live sessions a week, 75 minutes each, for 16 weeks. USD 1,152 plus USD 99 materials. This is remote part-time, not a campus visa product.
Private part-timeThat’s Mandarin and GoEast both sell one-to-one hours you can schedule lightly. The hourly price is higher.
ProgressTwo days a week will not finish a level in a month. That’s Mandarin’s four-week level claim sits on the intensive page, not the part-time one.

What Part-Time Looks Like on the Page

That’s Mandarin’s prices page describes part-time groups as two classes a day on two weekdays, Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, up to eight students, from 110 RMB a class, in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen on that page. The heading over the whole price list still says 2020. Their consultants’ note on the same page calls part-time the slower choice and intensive the fast one. That is the right frame. Four classes a week, if a “day” is two classes, is a fifth of the twenty-class intensive week. You will still learn. You will not keep the intensive forecast.

GoEast’s online group is part-time by design: two 75-minute sessions a week for sixteen weeks, forty-eight live hours in the course, plus portal work they expect you to do before class. The price is USD 1,152 plus USD 99. They list timezone windows so a student in Europe or North America can join without moving to Shanghai. That product never puts you in a Chinese classroom. It also never pretends to.

Best for People Already Allowed to Stay

Part-time study is the right second decision for someone who is in China on a work status, a family status, or a degree at a university and wants Mandarin beside that life. The course does not need to justify the visa because something else already did. In that case, optimize for the hour of day, the commute to campus, and a teacher who will recycle workplace vocabulary. GoEast even says one teacher’s background includes human resources work, as a sketch of fit for professional learners. Treat staff biographies as introductions, not as a placement service.

It is a poor first decision for someone outside China who needs a visa to enter for the purpose of study. CLI says activities should match the visa and points to Article 37 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law (出境入境管理法). A handful of evening classes is difficult to describe as a full course of study. LTL will not process a student visa at all. That’s Mandarin’s separate “student visa program” on the prices page is 12 or 24 weeks at 15 classes a week, not the part-time line. Read the product that mentions the visa, and notice the hours attached to it.

How Slowly Part-Time Moves

That’s Mandarin says an intensive month completes one of their levels and that six intensive months land near HSK 3. They do not repeat that sentence on the part-time block. Scale it roughly by hours and you are looking at many months for the same ground, before you count the forgetting that happens between Tuesdays. GoEast’s sixteen-week online group covers a slice of their ten-level map, not the whole map. Beginning stage on their page is three levels and 630 words. One part-time course is not that whole stage unless they say it is.

Homework is the lever you still control. GoEast’s class flow asks you to watch videos before the live hour and to review on the portal after it. If you only attend the live hour, you bought the smaller half. A part-time student who does the preparation can outpace a tired intensive student who tours every afternoon. The timetable is not destiny. It is the minimum.

Price the Month, Not the Class

A from-price of 110 RMB a class looks small beside a weekly intensive. Multiply. Two days with two classes is four classes a week, about sixteen classes a month, about 1,760 RMB before any newer price, any materials fee, and any private add-on. That arithmetic uses the 2020-headed figure. Ask for the 2026 invoice. GoEast’s sixteen-week total of USD 1,152 plus USD 99 is easier to compare because it is already a course total. CLI does not really sell this shape: their week is twenty one-to-one hours, and a light schedule would be their online hours, which they say never expire.

Housing rarely makes sense as a student package if you only attend two days a week, unless you already needed the housing for another reason. That’s Mandarin’s homestay minimum is about four weeks and is tied to being their student. A local resident does not need it. A visitor who wants part-time lessons and a hotel for a fortnight should read the language-holiday page, not pretend the hotel is a homestay.

Stacking Part-Time with a Goal

Part-time hours are enough for maintenance, for a workplace vocabulary list, and for a slow climb toward a modest HSK level if you add private exam drills near the test date. They are a weak way to transform a complete beginner into someone who can work in Mandarin this year. If that is the goal, look at an intensive block of one or more months, or at CLI’s twenty-hour weeks, and use part-time or online hours before and after. The online page on this cluster is written for that sandwich.

Tell the school the goal in one sentence: “I need to handle a weekly supplier call,” or “I want HSK 3 next spring,” or “I want to read school messages from my child’s teacher.” A part-time group aimed at general conversation will waste a specialist. A private hour, fewer of them, may be the better buy. That’s Mandarin’s own consultant note says to pick private when you want your own pace.

The Next Real Step

Confirm you already have the right to be in the city for the dates you will study, or confirm you will study online from home. Then get the weekly minutes, the cap, the current price per class, and whether a textbook is extra. If you need a visa letter, stop and switch products. Do not pay a part-time deposit while you “see what the visa officer says.”

DragonTrail can look at that choice with you. We will not enroll you in a Tuesday class. Find a Suitable Program is the map of study routes. Request Guidance is for your actual week: city, status, and hours you can protect. There is no part-time calendar here.

FAQ

Can I get a student visa with a part-time course?

Do not plan on it. That’s Mandarin’s visa-oriented product on the prices page is 15 classes a week for 12 or 24 weeks, not the two-day part-time group. LTL says it cannot process a student visa. CLI ties X2 study status to a real study stay, and it says a tourist status is the wrong tool for regular study. Ask the school what minimum timetable their letter uses, and expect a fuller week.

Is part-time the same as evening class?

Not always. That’s Mandarin’s prices page names two weekdays and does not, in the block we read, lock the clock time. Their consultant note mentions weekday evenings as the leisurely picture. Ask for the clock. A 14:00 class and a 19:00 class are both “part-time” and only one of them survives a job.

How long until I finish a level?

Longer than the intensive month That’s Mandarin advertises. They attach “one level in four weeks” to twenty classes a week. A part-time load of a handful of classes a week stretches that. Ask the school for their part-time level length rather than dividing by guesswork and calling it a plan.

Is the 110 RMB price current?

It is the figure on a page whose heading still says 2020, fetched 29 October 2026. The intensive page from the same school, fetched the same day, uses 104 RMB for a different timetable. Treat 110 RMB as a published starting point that may be stale, and get a dated invoice.

Can I combine part-time group classes with a private hour?

Often, yes, and you should price both. A group keeps you moving through a book. A private hour fixes your tones or your work vocabulary. That’s Mandarin and GoEast both sell the two shapes. They are two invoices.

I live outside China. Is part-time still useful?

Yes, online. GoEast’s two sessions a week are built for that, with timezone bands on the page. A campus part-time course is a poor reason to fly. You would pay for housing in order to attend two mornings.

Will part-time classes prepare me for HSK?

Only if the teacher is teaching the exam. A general part-time group may share vocabulary with an HSK level and still skip the question types. GoEast’s exam page sells a separate prep product with its own hour suggestions. Add that near the test rather than hoping Tuesday conversation is enough.

Does DragonTrail know which evening classes are open this month?

No. We do not hold a roster. The school does. We can help you decide whether part-time is the right shape for your visa status and your goal, and then you confirm the open group with them.
