Family Mandarin Learning
Family Mandarin learning means more than one plan. An adult’s intensive morning, a teenager’s supervised week, and a younger child’s schooling are different products, different hours, and often different rules. No single “family course” on this page bundles them. You can still travel together. You should buy only the parts a named school will actually teach, and you should not assume a child can sit in an adult room.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail has no family package, no child-minding service, and no school-enrollment service. CLI publishes a chaperone fee for some older minors on its own programs. That fee is CLI’s, for CLI’s students, not a service we resell.
At a Glance
| Adults | Use the format pages: intensive, part-time, or private. An adult can study while another adult works only if the visa status already allows that life. |
|---|---|
| Older minors | CLI’s FAQ describes chaperones for students aged 15–17, at USD 320 a week on top of tuition, one minor per chaperone, with a homestay option and different rules at 17. |
| Younger children | Not an adult beginner class. Local schooling is a legal and admissions process of its own, not a language-school add-on. |
| Housing | That’s Mandarin’s private apartment notes one or two people. A homestay is a private room. A third bed is a question, not a default. |
| Schedules | If two adults want the same morning class, the group may not have two seats at your level. Private lessons duplicate the cost. |
| Heritage parents | A parent’s fluency does not place a child. See the heritage page for the adult and keep the child’s assessment separate. |
| Money | Multiply tuition by people. CLI’s four-week private-room example is USD 2,870 for one immersion student, not for a household. |
| Visa | Each passport has its own status. A parent’s study letter does not automatically describe a child. |
| DragonTrail | No family calendar and no guardian service. |
Write a Plan for Each Person
Start with a row per passport: age, Mandarin level, the hours they can study, and who is responsible for them at 15:00. An adult who wants That’s Mandarin’s 08:30–12:00 intensive block cannot also be the person watching a young child, unless another adult is free. A couple who both want that block need two seats at the right level in the same city on the same Monday. That’s Mandarin says intensive spots are limited per level per city. Two beginners are an easier pair than one beginner and one advanced partner. The advanced partner may be in private lessons at a higher price while the beginner is in a group. That is a normal outcome, not a failure.
GoEast’s online classes let one person study from a kitchen without moving the family. Their heritage segment even mentions passing language to children, which can mean a parent studies and then practices at home. It is not a children’s enrollment. Use online hours when only one person needs the course.
Teenagers and the Supervision Question
CLI’s FAQ is the most specific public note we read on minors. For students aged 15 to 17 they describe a chaperone who is a CLI team member, available around the clock, living on the same floor at their center, checking in three times a day, and accompanying the student out, at USD 320 a week plus tuition. They say one chaperone does not support two minors. A 15- or 16-year-old in a homestay still pays that fee on their account; a 17-year-old in a homestay may opt out. This is CLI’s Guilin design. It is not a Beijing or Shanghai product, and it is not DragonTrail’s. LTL sells summer camps and school trips with their own age ranges and per-student prices in RMB on the Beijing page, including teacher ratios for groups. A camp week with activities is not the adult intensive, and a school trip price is not a family’s long stay.
Do not place a teenager in an adult evening class and call it supervision. Ask the school for a written age minimum. If they have none, that is information. Young children are outside the adult products on these pages. Enrolling a child in a Chinese school is a local education question, with its own papers. This cluster does not process it.
Beds, Meals, and Who the Landlord Accepts
Count beds before you count lessons. That’s Mandarin’s private apartment is described for one or two people, as a studio or a small one-bedroom, from about four weeks, meals not included. Their homestay is a private room in a family’s home, breakfast and two other meals a week, bathroom not always private. A couple in a homestay needs the host’s yes. A child in that room needs a much clearer yes, and many hosts will say no. LTL’s Beijing studios start at USD 646 a week and homestays at USD 412, course separate, students only. CLI includes a room in the immersion price for the student; a second person is not in the USD 2,870 four-week example. Ask, in writing, before you buy flights for three people on a one-person invoice.
Meals sound small until a child will not eat what the canteen serves. CLI’s optional meal plan is USD 20 a week if added ahead, or 30 RMB a meal, for the student at their center. It is not a family board. Budget restaurant money the way CLI budgets USD 70–100 a week for one student’s ordinary spending in Guilin, and then scale it. Those are CLI’s figures for one person.
Each Passport Is Its Own Status
A study letter for one adult does not describe a spouse or a child. CLI says the purpose of the stay has to match the visa and discusses X2 for its own students, not for an accompanying household. Some family members may be eligible for a short visa-free entry that does not cover “regular study,” which is CLI’s distinction, and some passports, including the United States on their account, are outside the 30-day visa-free list they describe. Read each passport. LTL will not process a student visa for the student, let alone a household. That’s Mandarin’s student-visa materials attach to their study products and their required hours, not to a dependent.
If one partner will work, that is an employer’s visa, and the language course is part-time at most. The part-time page explains why a light course is the wrong tool for someone’s only permission to stay. Do not build a family plan on a single hopeful letter.
Add the Invoices Up
Write one line per person: course, housing share, meals, local transport, flights, insurance, and any chaperone. A couple in two intensive group weeks at LTL’s Beijing floor of USD 387 each, plus one studio at USD 646, is already above USD 1,400 a week before food and flights, using only published floors. A CLI student at USD 2,870 for four weeks does not include a spouse. A chaperone at USD 320 a week sits on top of that teenager’s tuition. None of this is a DragonTrail family discount. Schools’ own promotions, such as LTL’s city percentage tags, apply only if that school says the tag applies to your product and your date.
Deposits multiply too. CLI’s USD 300 deposit is per accepted student on their FAQ, due before the seat is held. Two students can mean two deposits. Confirm that rather than assuming a household rate.
A Practical Order
Decide who must study and who is accompanying. Get an age policy and a housing diagram for the people who would actually be in the room. Price the sum. Then talk about visas per passport. Only after that should you talk about a shared city. A city that is perfect for one intensive student can be impossible for a toddler or a working spouse.
Request Guidance with ages and dates if you want help seeing which parts are language study and which parts nobody on these pages sells. We will not invent a nanny, a school seat, or a family discount. Find a Suitable Program if one of the adults is also looking at a degree, which is a separate admission.
Price Each Person Before You Price the Apartment
A family stay is several courses plus one set of rooms. LTL’s Beijing homestay starts at USD 412 a week with meals, and the page says about 80 percent of students choose it. That’s Mandarin’s homestay is for students, from about four weeks, with breakfast daily and two other meals a week, in a private room whose bathroom is not always private. CLI’s FAQ prices a private room at the center with housing inside tuition, and it prices a chaperone for ages 15–17 at USD 320 a week, one minor per chaperone, with different homestay rules at 17. None of those lines is a family package. A parent in a morning intensive and a teenager in another class can need two tuitions and a room that the school’s student housing will not sell to a non-student.
Ask who counts as a student. That’s Mandarin’s housing page says the rooms are for students. A spouse who is not enrolled may need a hotel, which that page associates with stays of about two or three weeks. Children are not automatically enrolled because a parent paid. Local school admission is a different system, and this cluster does not process it. Write each person’s hours, each person’s level, the housing rule for non-students, and the chaperone fee if a minor is in the plan. A family (家庭) plan is that list, not a single package. DragonTrail does not sell a family intake.

FAQ
Do you sell a family Mandarin package?
No. Each learner needs a real product from a school that accepts their age. Housing has to fit the headcount. DragonTrail does not bundle those into a single family SKU.
Can my teenager join an adult class?
Only if that school’s written age rule allows it. CLI, for 15–17, describes a chaperoned program at an extra USD 320 a week, not a seat in a general adult room. LTL sells camps and school trips with their own prices. Ask. Do not assume.
Can two adults share one intensive seat?
No. Seats are per person. A pair can ask for a private lesson together, and the price will not automatically be half of two group seats. That’s Mandarin’s group cap still counts heads.
Will a homestay take a couple or a child?
Sometimes a couple, rarely a young child, and only with the host’s agreement. That’s Mandarin’s homestay is a private room. LTL’s is for their students. Get the names and the bed count in writing. A photo of a sofa is not a bed.
Can my spouse stay as a tourist while I study?
That depends on the spouse’s passport and on whether their activities match that status. It is not a right created by your acceptance letter. CLI’s materials are about the student. Ask a consulate about the accompanying person before you buy two flights.
Can this page place our child in a local school?
That is not a language-center enrollment. Local schools have their own admissions and guardianship rules. Nothing on this Mandarin cluster processes them.
Is online study better for a family?
It is better when only one person needs lessons or when you cannot move. GoEast’s online groups and private hours work from home. They do not give the rest of the family a life in China. A move is a housing and visa project first.
Will DragonTrail help us compare two schools’ age rules?
Yes, as a reading of what those schools publish. We will not supervise a minor and we will not confirm a seat. Send the ages and the two offers.
