Shanghai technology: AI you can try, industry you can understand

Shanghai offers a useful contrast between the technology people can try today and the industrial systems behind it. Central-city retail makes an easy introduction. Zhangjiang adds hands-on AI products and robotics applications. An arranged trip to Anting can take the story into automotive manufacturing.

Choose one geographical focus for a shorter visit. Jing'an, Zhangjiang and Anting each reward time on the ground, and they should not be treated as neighbouring stops. Shanghai is also an East China gateway, not merely a transfer to Hangzhou.

Try robots and AI products

Unitree Robotics Experience Center — public visit. On the second floor of Jiuguang Department Store, 1618 West Nanjing Road, Unitree's experience centre brings humanoids and robot dogs into a familiar shopping setting. AI Matrix Store / MetAI Hub — public visit. At 1650 Haike Road in Zhangjiang, AI Matrix Store brings together AI products, robot interaction and maker-oriented equipment. It is particularly relevant if you would rather try things than look only at displays. Published hours are 09:30–18:30. Workshops, equipment use and any paid activities need separate checking. Galbot Shop — public visit. A deployed robot retail concept near Super Brand Mall in Lujiazui shows a different side of robotics: serving customers and retrieving goods. It is a useful example of automation in a shopping setting, rather than a destination to build an entire day around. Confirm the exact location and current operation before making a special journey. Look beyond the shop floor

Zhangjiang Robot Valley Future Experience Hall — advance reservation. The hall at 2388 Xiupu Road introduces industrial, medical and service robots, with published examples including robot coffee-making and portrait drawing. It has appeared in organised city-visit programmes. Ordinary visitor hours, booking and overseas-visitor eligibility still need confirmation, so include it only after a visit has been agreed. Shanghai Foundation Model Innovation Center — host approval. Also known as 模速空间, this Xuhui AI incubator is relevant to teams studying how AI businesses develop. It is a working professional setting. An enquiry should explain the team's interests and proposed purpose. Meetings, tenant access and technical discussions depend on host acceptance. It is not a verified walk-in visitor attraction. See automotive manufacturing

SAIC-Volkswagen in Anting — advance reservation. Shanghai's official tourism information lists group visits to SAIC-Volkswagen production and exhibition facilities, including new-energy manufacturing. Confirm which plant and production areas your booking includes, whether production will be running, the minimum group size, language, identification and photography rules. A factory visit should be the anchor of that day's plan, with other activities fitted around the confirmed session. This listing is a group reservation route. Events worth following

• World Artificial Intelligence Conference: the 2026 edition ran 17–20 July. Its exhibitions, city walks and robot activities were tied to that edition. 2027 dates are not yet verified. WAIC 2026 visitor guide.

Match the visit to your interests

For an approachable introduction, begin in Jing'an with Unitree. For hands-on exploration, allow time for Zhangjiang's AI products and arrange any additional robotics venue beforehand. Professional teams can build a more focused programme around industrial applications, manufacturing or AI businesses, with each host visit confirmed on its own terms.
