Alipay is widely accepted across mainland China, although payment methods can vary by merchant. RMB cash remains a legal payment option even when mobile payment is dominant in everyday shops, cafés and transport.

Can Foreigners Use Alipay in China?

Yes. Foreign visitors can use Alipay in mainland China.

How to Set Up Alipay as a Foreigner

Foreign visitors set up Alipay by downloading the official app, switching to English if needed, registering with an international phone number, completing passport verification when asked, linking a supported overseas card, and making a small test payment when possible.

Step 1 — Download the Correct Alipay App

Download the standard Alipay app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Use the official store listing named Alipay — not third-party APK mirrors.

Visitors should use the standard Alipay app available from official app stores for mainland China payments. Avoid unofficial “Alipay clone” apps.

Step 2 — Switch Alipay to English

Alipay is available in English. After install, open Me → Settings → General → Language (wording can vary slightly by version) and choose English.

If menus still appear partly in Chinese, you are often inside a merchant mini-program or a city transport page that has not been fully localized. The main Alipay payment and card screens are available in English.

Step 3 — Register With Your International Phone Number

Register with your overseas mobile number and country code. Enter the SMS verification code when prompted.

A mainland Chinese +86 number is not normally required for registration. The number must be able to receive SMS while you set the account up — another reason to finish registration before travel if your home carrier restricts SMS abroad.

Step 4 — Complete Identity Verification

Major international card networks are commonly supported, but acceptance depends on Alipay’s current product rules and your issuing bank. Do not assume every American Express, JCB or regional card will link successfully. Alipay can support metro, bus and ride-hailing payments in many Chinese cities, but activation is city-specific.

Metro and Bus

Typical path: Alipay → Transport → select current city → Metro/Bus → activate transport QR code.

Availability and activation workflow vary by city. One transport QR does not automatically work everywhere. Change the city in Transport when you travel between Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an and other hubs, and complete any local activation steps shown in the app.

Taxi / Ride Hailing

Alipay also surfaces taxi / ride-hailing functions. Foreign travelers can usually enter pickup and destination inside the app when the service is available for their account and city.

A “fee-free Alipay payment under RMB 200” can still produce a bank FX fee on your statement.
