The five-step Summer Palace visit
Visit the Summer Palace in five steps. (1) Choose a gate based on transport: Beigongmen (Line 4 subway) for the easiest arrival, East Gate for the historic main entrance, New Palace Gate (south) for southbound transport. (2) Buy the 60 RMB through-ticket at the gate window (basic 30 RMB only if your visit is under 90 min). (3) Walk into the garden: Long Corridor along Kunming Lake, then climb Longevity Hill (Pai-yun Gate, Hall of Dispelling Clouds, Tower of Buddhist Incense). (4) Cross to Suzhou Street on the north side, then walk or take the boat back across Kunming Lake. (5) Exit the gate that matches your next destination - East for taxi, Beigongmen for subway. Total 2-3 hours standard, 4-5 hours full.
- Drive time from Beijing: Subway Line 4 Beigongmen 5-min walk to north gate; taxi from central Beijing 30-45 min
- Typical visit style: 2-3 hr standard; 4-5 hr full deep visit
- Difficulty: Easy walking; Longevity Hill is 100+ stone steps optional
- Crowds: Gate ticket queue is the slowest part on summer weekends
- Best for: First-time visitors planning the day; Independent travellers without a guide; Anyone wanting one clear sequence
- Less ideal for: Booking a private tour - your guide handles the sequence

Which gate to use
Three open gates. Beigongmen (north, Line 4 subway exit, 5-min walk) is the easiest for international visitors - you enter at the back of the park near Suzhou Street and walk south through Longevity Hill to the lake. East Gate (historic main entrance) is the right choice if arriving by taxi - drops you at the Long Corridor end and gives the classic south-to-north walking flow. New Palace Gate (south) is less used; choose it only if your hotel is in southwest Beijing.
- Beigongmen: subway + walk south through hill.
- East Gate: taxi + walk through Long Corridor first.
- New Palace Gate: south, less used.
- Most international visitors enter Beigongmen.
What to bring
Three essentials. (1) Passport - required at the gate (lighter enforcement than FC but still policy). (2) Water bottle - kiosks inside but expensive. (3) Closed-toe walking shoes - stone paths up Longevity Hill. Optional: sun hat in summer, hand fan, small umbrella (no metal tips - same security rule as Tiananmen). The park has plenty of restrooms and small kiosks; you don't need to over-pack.
- Passport (policy).
- Water bottle.
- Closed-toe walking shoes.
- Sun hat in summer.
- Small umbrella with plastic tip.
Boat decision
Take the dragon-boat unless time-tight or windy. The boat runs East Gate dock to South Lake Island (17-Arch Bridge) - 15 RMB one-way, 25 RMB return. Saves 30-45 min walking around Kunming Lake and gives the lake-level view of Longevity Hill that is the iconic Summer Palace photograph. Self-paddle row boats (40-60 RMB/hr) are an alternative for couples wanting more time on the water. Boats run April-October only; lake freezes in winter.
- Dragon-boat 15 RMB one-way - default yes.
- Self-paddle 40-60 RMB/hr - couples option.
- Saves 30-45 min walking.
- Lake-level view of Longevity Hill is the icon.
- Skip if windy or under 2 hr total.
Restrooms and food
Restrooms at every major junction - East Gate, Long Corridor mid-point, Hall of Dispelling Clouds base, Suzhou Street, Beigongmen, New Palace Gate. Food is limited inside the garden - small kiosks at Long Corridor and Suzhou Street with simple noodles, tea, snacks (overpriced but functional). Plan lunch before or after at the Yiheyuan-area restaurants outside Beigongmen or East Gate (10-15 min walk). No food allowed inside the structures (Tower of Buddhist Incense etc.).
- Restrooms: 6+ junctions across the park.
- Food: small kiosks at Long Corridor + Suzhou Street.
- Better lunch: outside Beigongmen or East Gate restaurants.
- No food inside the structures.
Common how-to-visit mistakes
Entering East Gate when arriving by subway
Line 4 stops at Beigongmen on the north side. Walking from any other subway to East Gate adds 20-30 min.
Buying basic ticket and trying the hill
Longevity Hill structures require the through-ticket. Basic is for lake-only walks.
Skipping the boat
Saves 30-45 min and gives the iconic lake view. Almost always worth 15 RMB.
Going midday in July-August
Heat + tour groups peak. 7-8 AM or 3-5 PM instead.
