University Summer Schools

A university summer school in China is a short course a named university runs, often in English, sometimes for credit and sometimes not. The 2026 examples below had already finished when this page was checked. DragonTrail does not run a summer school and does not hold a July seat for next year.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

Fudan (复旦大学) published 22,000 RMB, or 19,800 RMB for partner nominees, for 13 July to 7 August 2026, plus a 400 RMB fee. Three Tsinghua pages described 2026 summers with tuition waived and different dates, deadlines, and meal rules. None of those figures is a price you can still pay for summer 2026, and none is a winter price.

Summer Schools Are Not One Product

University summer schools in China share a season and then diverge. Fudan’s 2026 International Summer Session was a four-week, English-taught, fee-charging course load with a credit cap and a self-pay price. Tsinghua’s Yan Lab summer charged no tuition and offered a living allowance and a bed, for a two-week theme in culture and mental health. The Department of Electronic Engineering waived tuition and accommodation for nominated partner students and told them to budget canteen meals. The Vanke School of Public Health offered free registration and subsidies for housing and meals for a different fortnight. Four notices, four budgets. A search result that says “summer school in Beijing” has not named which of them it means.

DragonTrail does not add a fifth product. We also do not average a waived Tsinghua week with Fudan’s 22,000 RMB and call the result a typical price. Find a Suitable Program will not show open July seats. If you need a fall term instead of July, use Semester Abroad in China. The money and the visa length change with the calendar.

What Fudan Published for Summer 2026

The session ran from 13 July to 7 August 2026. Courses were in English. The university and the Shanghai municipal note describe more than 40 credit-transferable courses in modules that include medicine, business and economics, law, society and politics, history and culture, science and technology, Chinese, and sport, plus activities and a company visit. Students had to be current university students, at least 18, with strong English and the health to handle the month. Fudan degree students could join as well. The program has run since 2012, a history the host tells; it is not a promise about 2027.

Money is a flat tuition, not a per-course meter. Full price was 22,000 RMB. Official nominees of partner universities paid 19,800 RMB. Students nominated as tuition-waived exchange students paid no application fee and no tuition. The application fee otherwise was 400 RMB, non-refundable. The fee includes courses, activities except a day trip outside Shanghai, and one company visit. It excludes accommodation, food, insurance, and travel. International applicants were asked to finish by noon on 1 June 2026, all applicants by 8 June, and tuition by 15 June. Checked on 29 October 2026, those gates are shut. A blog that still shows 22,000 RMB is describing last summer unless Fudan reprints it.

Three Tsinghua Summers, Three Invoices

The Yan Lab page for 2026 says there is no tuition, that a living allowance and accommodation are provided, and that participants pay international travel, visa fees, personal costs, and any insurance the trip requires. Applicants had to be non-Chinese citizens enrolled outside mainland China, or not holding student status at a Chinese institution, with English strong enough for the seminars. The deadline printed was 23:59 Beijing time on 12 June 2026. The theme was culture and mental health. That is a funded short school, not a blank check, and the deadline has passed.

Electronic Engineering’s 2026 school ran 21 June to 5 July, waived tuition and accommodation for accepted students, housed them two to a room, and estimated canteen meals at about 30 to 50 RMB a day when the program was not feeding the group. It was for nominees of partner institutions, with a 7 April 2026 deadline. The Vanke public-health school ran 4 to 17 July, in English, with free registration and subsidies for on-campus housing and meals, travel self-funded, for final-year undergraduates or master’s students outside mainland China. Its deadline was 17:00 on 15 March 2026. Partner-only and open-application schools are both “Tsinghua” and are not substitutes for each other.

Credit on One Campus, None on Another

Fudan says the courses are credit-transferable and then limits a student to six credits of content courses plus physical education and Chinese, inside the flat fee. Transfer remains the home university’s act. Arrive with written approval if those six credits must count. Peking University’s visiting hub describes an international summer lab that is the opposite: no courses, no credits, and no tuition. Do not cite Fudan’s six credits as if they applied in that laboratory. A home form that demands a transcript will not be satisfied by a lab that promised none.

Degree credit is a third thing. The New Media master’s at Peking University requires 30 credits over two years. That is not a summer. NYU Shanghai’s RMB-per-credit table is for its degree students’ terms, not for Fudan’s July. Academic Credits and Transcripts separates the scales. If your only goal is a line on a résumé, say so, and do not pay for a transcript pathway you will not use. If your goal is progress toward a degree, the host’s credit sentence is the first line to read.

Visas for a Short Summer

A two-week or four-week school often sits under 180 days, which is the X2 side of the Beijing municipal guide when the purpose is study and the school issues an admission notice. It can also sit inside a visa-free stay for some passports, which is a nationality rule, not a school rule. Tsinghua’s EE page says visa rules vary, points students to the embassy, and says the department can discuss documents for officially nominated students who need a visa. Fudan asked international students to apply by 1 June 2026 partly to leave time for a visa. Neither page is permission to enter. Check the consulate for the passport you hold.

Do not use a tourist plan to attend a school that told you to bring an admission letter, and do not buy a year-long X1 for a fortnight because a degree page mentioned X1. Match the letter’s dates. Insurance may be required even when tuition is zero. The Yan Lab page says participants pay insurance if it is required. Fudan excludes insurance from tuition. A waived fee is not waived responsibility at the border or at the clinic.

Next Summer Is a New Notice

On 29 October 2026 every deadline in the paragraphs above is history. The right use of those numbers is comparison: some university summers charge a flat tuition near 22,000 RMB, some waive tuition and still leave meals or flights to you, and the credit rules do not travel from one school to the next. The wrong use is to pay a third party that offers “Fudan summer” at last year’s price without a link to a new Fudan page. Ask for the host URL, the dates, the credit line, and what is excluded.

DragonTrail can read that next notice with you. We cannot reserve a seat, extend a 2026 deadline, or treat a Tsinghua waiver as a discount code for Fudan. University Winter Schools explains why these July figures must not be copied into January. Cost of Studying is the wider budget. How To Apply helps when the route is an application you file yourself. Until the 2027 pages exist, this guide stops at what 2026 actually printed.

FAQ

Does DragonTrail run a university summer school?

No. Fudan and several Tsinghua schools published their own 2026 sessions. We do not hold places for a future July. Find a Suitable Program does not list summer seats. When a host posts a new notice, that notice replaces the dates on this page.

Is 22,000 RMB the price of a summer in China?

It was Fudan’s full tuition for a four-week session in 2026, with 19,800 RMB for some partner nominees and a full waiver for tuition-free exchange nominees. Tsinghua pages we read charged no tuition and still left travel, and sometimes meals, to the student. There is no single summer price.

Can I still apply for July 2026?

No. Fudan’s international deadline was 1 June 2026. Tsinghua deadlines we read were in March, April, and June 2026. The sessions themselves were in June and July 2026. This page was checked on 29 October 2026. Wait for the next notice.

Will the courses count at my university?

Only if your university says so. Fudan caps the flat fee at six content credits plus physical education and Chinese, and calls the courses credit-transferable. Tsinghua’s summer lab at Peking University, a different host, says it awards no credits. Get written approval before you rely on the transcript.

Are meals and housing included?

Not at Fudan, which excludes accommodation, food, insurance, and travel. The Yan Lab page includes a living allowance and accommodation and excludes flights. EE includes a room and not everyday canteen meals. Read the school you mean. A waiver of tuition is not a waiver of dinner.

Do I have to be nominated?

For Tsinghua EE’s 2026 school, yes: partner institutions nominated students. Fudan allowed self-pay students and a cheaper price for partner nominees, plus a full waiver for tuition-free exchange nominees. The Yan Lab and Vanke pages describe their own applicant pools. Nomination is not universal.

Is a summer school a student-visa guarantee?

No. Short study may fit an X2 pattern or a visa-free stay, depending on your passport and the length on the admission letter. The EE page tells students to check the embassy. A consulate decides. DragonTrail does not issue the letter or the visa.

What should I send about a future summer?

Send the host’s current URL when it exists, the credit rule you need, and whether a partner must nominate you. Do not send only the phrase “summer in China.” We will not quote 22,000 RMB for a year the host has not published.

Compare study routes, or tell us the credential, the teaching language, and the city. Neither button admits you to a university.
