Academic Year Abroad in China
An academic year abroad in China is a fall and a spring at a host university while your degree, if you have one, stays at home. It is longer than a semester and shorter than a bachelor’s. The host may bill each term separately. DragonTrail does not sell the year or combine the invoices.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
Peking University’s visiting page says students may stay one semester or one academic year, then prices Chinese courses at 18,000 RMB a semester and credit courses at 24,000 RMB a semester. It does not print a discounted year total. The page is stamped 2024-04-01. A 预科 “two semesters” at 27,000 RMB each was a 2026 preparatory product, not this year abroad, and that window has closed.
At a Glance
| What the year is | Two terms of non-degree or exchange study. Not four to six years of 本科, and not a three-year 专科. |
|---|---|
| How PKU prices it | Per semester on the visiting page: 18,000 RMB for Chinese courses or 24,000 RMB for credit courses. A year is two of those bills unless a newer notice bundles them. |
| Who may apply direct | Students with one undergraduate year finished. Chinese-taught credit work needs HSK 6 above 180. There is no basic Chinese floor for language classes. |
| Exchange version | Only if your home university nominates you. Fudan’s published waiver was for a four-week summer, not proof that a full year is free. |
| Visa | A full year is over six months. The visiting page then uses JW202, an X1 visa, and a residence permit within 30 days of entry. |
| Insurance and housing | Outside the semester fee. Registration at Peking University stops without insurance. Housing is a separate reservation or a private lease. |
| Credit risk | Two transcripts can still be refused at home, or accepted only up to a cap. The visiting page never states how many 学分 a semester contains. |
| Dates to confirm | Fall applications are written as March–April and spring as November, on a 2024 page. A year that starts in September needs the fall window of that year, not last year’s HTML. |
| DragonTrail | No year-long inventory. We will not multiply 24,000 by two and call it an offer. |
A Year Abroad Is Two Terms, Not a Degree
Academic year abroad in China sounds like a single product and is usually two semesters with a winter in between. Peking University’s visiting page allows either one semester or one academic year, which tells you the year exists as a status and does not tell you the price of the pair. The only figures on that page are semester figures: 18,000 RMB for Chinese courses and 24,000 RMB for credit courses, plus 400 RMB to apply. Doubling them is arithmetic, not a published annual fee. If a later invoice offers a year price, use that invoice.
The year is still non-degree unless you were admitted to a degree. Order No. 42 keeps advanced study and research scholars apart from 本科 and postgraduate degrees. A bachelor’s at the same university is four to six years in Chinese, with tuition that the 2026 brochure had not yet set. A 预科 year of two semesters at 27,000 RMB each was preparation for that bachelor’s, for 2026 entry, and those applications have closed. Semester Abroad in China is the one-term version of the visiting stay. Do not upgrade it to a degree by staying for spring.
Nomination or Invoice, for Twelve Months
A year under an exchange agreement is whatever the two universities signed: tuition waived, tuition discounted, or tuition billed to the student with a place reserved. We do not have those contracts. The only waiver we could read in full was Fudan’s 2026 summer, four weeks, for students a home university nominated under a tuition-free agreement. Using that waiver to promise a free September-to-June year would mislead you. Ask your study-abroad office whether a year-long agreement exists and who pays the second semester if you fail the first.
Without a nomination, the visiting application is the public route. You need a year of undergraduate study already done, a passport, transcripts, a study plan of 500 to 1,000 words, and two academic recommendations. Chinese-taught credit courses need HSK 6 above 180. You mail a signed form. University Exchange Programs explains why the nomination and the direct application should not share a budget. DragonTrail cannot tell your office to nominate you for a year.
Two Bills, and a Winter Between Them
Plan the money as two semesters plus the weeks when the campus is quiet. The visiting page does not say the spring bill is included in the fall payment. It also does not describe a winter school. The university pages we opened for short courses in 2026 were summer sessions at Fudan and at Tsinghua, not January programs with a sticker price. Do not park a summer fee in the winter gap and call it included. If you must leave China between terms, ask whether the residence permit and the dormitory booking survive the trip.
Housing for a year is the cost people under-count. The visiting tuition lines do not include a room. A dormitory office can offer a bed per semester and change the building in the spring. An off-campus lease may ask for months of rent up front. Peking University’s undergraduate brochure, written for degree students, says off-campus addresses are registered with public security within 24 hours. Ask if a year-long visitor is under the same rule. Cost of Studying should hold the rent estimate after you have a real housing email, not before.
A Year Means the Long-Stay Visa Pattern
There is little ambiguity on length. An academic year exceeds 180 days. The visiting page says study over six months uses the admission letter and JW202 to apply for an X1 visa, which it describes as valid for 30 days after arrival, and then a residence permit from the international office within those 30 days. The Beijing municipal guide describes the same X1 path for study longer than 180 days, with a JW form, and X2 for shorter study. A year abroad is the X1 side. A four-week summer is not evidence about your year.
Insurance sits on the critical path. The visiting page says the ministry requires cover bought in China and that the university will not register you without it. Missing registration can matter as much as the visa. Put the insurance purchase on the same week as move-in, using the office’s instructions, not a travel policy you hope will be accepted. DragonTrail does not issue the residence permit and does not sell the insurance plan.
Credits Across Two Terms
Two semesters double the transcript problem. If one term’s 学分 are hard to convert, two terms are twice the argument with your registrar, unless the office pre-approves a full visiting year. The host has not published, on the visiting page, how many credits the 24,000 RMB buys even once. Fudan’s six-credit summer cap does not apply to this year. NYU Shanghai’s per-credit RMB table is for its own degree students in Shanghai, not for a visiting year at another campus. Bring your office a course list for both terms, or accept that spring courses may be unknown when you apply in the spring of the previous year.
Ask what happens to home progress if a course is failed or cancelled. Some degrees allow a leave of absence for the year. Some require a minimum load. A year abroad that puts you behind a required sequence at home is an expensive detour even when the host teaching is good. Academic Credits and Transcripts is the scale conversation. Have it before you pay the first semester, because the second semester is a poor moment to discover the first transcript will not count.
Decide With the Current Page
On 29 October 2026 the honest summary is narrow. A year as a visiting student is described. The prices we can quote are per semester and sit on a 2024 stamp. The application months are written as annual and still need a live check. Exchange years are private agreements. Summer waivers are not year waivers. No DragonTrail academic-year fee exists. If you multiply 24,000 by two in a spreadsheet, label the cell as arithmetic from an old page, not as a quotation.
Send the host URL, your office’s nomination or the lack of one, and whether both terms must carry credit. Find a Suitable Program will not show a year-long seat. Plan Your Study Stay helps after the letter arrives. How To Apply is the paper order for a file you submit yourself. The university still decides whether the second term is offered when the first term ends.

FAQ
Is an academic year abroad a one-year degree?
No. It is two terms of visiting or exchange study. A bachelor’s on Peking University’s 2026 brochure is four to six years. A 预科 of two semesters was preparatory and is not this year abroad. You should not receive a Chinese degree certificate for a visiting year.
Is there a single price for the year?
Not on the visiting page we read. It charges 18,000 or 24,000 RMB per semester and allows a stay of one academic year. It does not print a year bundle or a second-semester discount. The page is stamped 2024-04-01. Confirm before you double the figure.
Does Fudan’s tuition waiver cover a year?
The waiver we read covered the 2026 International Summer Session for nominated exchange students, a four-week program. It does not say a September-to-June exchange is free. Ask your own university whether a year-long agreement exists and what it pays.
Which visa do I need for a year?
The long-stay pattern. The visiting page uses X1 and JW202 when study exceeds six months, then a residence permit within 30 days. A year clears that line. The consulate still issues the visa. A summer X2, if you had one, does not cover the following academic year.
Will both semesters transfer?
Only if your home university approves both. The host page does not state a credit total for the semester fee, so it cannot state one for the year. Pre-approve as much of the load as you can, and ask what happens if spring courses are published late.
Does the year fee include the dormitory?
The visiting tuition lines we read do not. Housing is arranged separately, on campus or off. Insurance is also required before registration. Add those lines before you compare a year abroad with staying at home. DragonTrail does not book the room.
Can I start in spring and call it a year?
A spring-only stay is a semester. A year on the visiting page means the longer status the university grants, not two unrelated trips. If you need September through the following June, use the fall application window the live page is actually running, and ask whether spring is included or billed again.
What should I send to compare a year abroad?
Send the host’s fee page, your office’s note on nomination and credit, and the months you need to be away. We will not turn a 2024 semester price into a 2026 year quotation, and we will not submit the visiting form.
