At a Glance

Two Departments on One Closed Catalog

History and philosophy in China are easy to treat as one humanities mood. Beijing Normal University’s catalog does not. Philosophy sits in the College of Philosophy. History sits in the School of History. Each has its own award word, philosophy or history. The 2026 international brochure covers both inside a four-year Chinese-taught bachelor’s and says there are 40 majors in all. You may apply for two, which means two interviews. You may not assume that a philosophy file is a history file with a different essay.

HSK 5 at 180 is the rule for majors other than Chinese as a Second Language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. History and philosophy are outside those exceptions. The test date must be 1 November 2023 or later. A reading knowledge you gained in translation does not replace the certificate. Chinese Language, Literature, and China Studies is the literature row, which uses the same HSK floor and is still a different department. Social Sciences holds sociology so it is not folded into philosophy.

The Humanities Band Is a Clue, Not a Quote

The brochure is willing to be numeric: 12,400 RMB a semester and 24,000 RMB a year for humanities and social sciences, and 14,250 a semester and 27,700 a year for science, engineering, and arts. History and philosophy are the sort of majors a reader files under the first sentence. The catalog HTML we opened did not show a fee digit on those two rows the way it showed 27,700 beside some arts rows and 24,000 beside physical education. A missing digit stays missing. The application fee does not have that ambiguity. It was 500 RMB, paid online, and not refundable. An unpaid file was not processed. The personal statement had to be handwritten in Chinese on the university’s form. A printout was refused. Paper originals were mailed after the initial review, or the review stopped. Those rules are painful and clear. The tuition cell is the part we refuse to clarify from memory. Cost of Studying should not add a history dorm until both the tuition cell and a real housing offer exist.

Every Clock on the 2026 File Has Finished

Online filing ended 15 March 2026, China Standard Time. The brochure says all times are China Standard Time, GMT+8. Result notices were described from June 2026. Beijing international dorm booking ran from 09:00 on 1 July 2026 to 12:00 on 15 August 2026. Scholarship students on the full Chinese Government Scholarship or the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship were not supposed to book; the university arranged the room. On 29 October 2026 none of this is a live intake. The next notice on admission-is.bnu.edu.cn replaces it. The office’s final interpretation clause, and the rule that the Chinese text wins, remain reasons to read the Chinese PDF even when an English sentence looks familiar.

Age is 18 to 40, birth after 31 August 1986, which is a 2026-file sentence. A later brochure can move the birth date. Under 18 on 1 September 2026, a notarised guardian in Beijing for a Beijing major. The passport should not expire before 31 March 2027. Nationality, where a parent is Chinese or the applicant naturalised, uses the ministry’s four-year and two-year tests through 30 April 2026, nine months as a year, stamps as proof. Those packets are specific to that April. Do not reuse them blindly.

CSCA, Interviews, and Scholarships

CSCA is the written exam the brochure names. The catalog, not a blog, lists subjects. Neighboring humanities rows in the messy extract mention Chinese for liberal arts and mathematics. History and philosophy may match that pattern. They may not. We will not print a subject list we did not see on the row. Upload the report when it exists. The interview notice comes by the system and by email. Watch the address you registered. Two majors mean two interviews, not a longer version of one.

Scholarships named on the brochure include BNU’s new international student award, the Silk Road award, the Beijing government scholarship, the Chinese Government Scholarship via campuschina.org, and the teachers’ scholarship via cis.chinese.cn. A history applicant is unlikely to be on the teachers’ scholarship unless the major is actually Chinese-teaching. Read the scholarship’s own major list. None of these awards is a DragonTrail grant, and none of them was a reason to ignore the March deadline.

A Heritage Trip Is Not the School of History

Walking the Forbidden City, reading a classic in translation, or joining a short philosophy circle can be serious and still not be this bachelor’s. The catalog produces a history degree or a philosophy degree only if you are admitted and you finish. Ask what document a short course issues before you pay a tour price and call it history. Home universities sometimes want historiography or a specific philosophy tradition. The admissions page does not print the syllabus. Ask the department after the major name is real. Recognition for teaching history in a school system is a licensing question, closer to the education page than to this one. We will not claim that a BNU history degree licenses you to teach. Universities and Schools keeps 985, 211, and 双一流 as the labels the brochure uses, not as a ranking of philosophy departments we are willing to publish.

What To Read on the Next Humanities Notice

The degree word, the fee cell, the HSK floor, the CSCA subjects, and whether the statement must still be handwritten. Then the birth-date cutoff, because it was built for 2026. Pay 500 RMB only on the new page. Mail paper only if the new page still asks for paper. The 2026 address, A103 in the Main Building, may remain and may not. Use the address on the notice you are answering.

Send us the PDF page that shows history or philosophy and the number beside it. If the cell is still blank, we will say so, which is more useful than a confident 24,000. We cannot write the statement, we cannot sit the interview, and we cannot tell you that one humanities faculty outranks another. How To Apply is only the order of documents.
