Clinical Electives for Medical Students

A clinical elective for a medical student in China is a period a named hospital agrees to in writing. 浙江大学医学院附属邵逸夫医院 publishes one such route. Zhejiang University School of Medicine publishes a wider elective instruction. DragonTrail does not hold the weeks, and neither page is a licence to examine patients on your own.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

You are requesting a place until the host confirms it. The English Shaw pages and the Chinese Shaw page disagree on the floor. Shaw says an accepted rotation is free of a rotation fee. The university page says you pay all expenses. Pediatrics is excluded at Shaw. The university elective page is http-only, so it is quoted and not linked below. No partner inventory is claimed.

At a Glance

Who Shaw acceptsMedical students in the final two years. Other healthcare students should be near the end of the degree. Residents, nurses, and pharmacists are named on the training page.
Shaw lengthAt least two weeks and less than three months. At least two weeks in one department before you change.
University lengthForeign medical students: maximum twelve weeks at affiliated hospitals. Allow at least six months to finish the process.
Shaw timingPrefer the file six months ahead. Acceptance is first come, first served. Arrive on a weekday. No weekend staff at the collaboration centre.
Shaw feeIf accepted, the rotation is free of charge. Housing, meals, and transport are yours. Insurance is your decision on that page.
University moneyAfter acceptance, personal funds for any and all expenses, your insurance, your visa. The school provides the acceptance letter. This does not copy Shaw’s “free” sentence onto the other six sites.

ScopeShaw: clinical observation and rotations, “through observation and study,” an English-speaking attending as instructor, except pediatrics. Not a list of procedures you may perform.
Home schoolPartner students at Zhejiang are told to use the home coordinator. A dean’s letter is part of the school-level file. Your university decides whether the weeks count as credit.

There Are Two Public Layers, and They Do Not Match

Start with the layer you are actually writing to. 邵逸夫医院’s own English pages describe an international elective that began in 1999 and now receives more than 50 students and young professionals a year. The elective text offers clinical observation and rotations of at least two weeks and less than three months, in most major specialties except pediatrics, with the visitor in the same programme as other students of that department, taught by an English-speaking attending physician. The questions add the final-two-years rule, the six-month preference, and the free rotation fee.

Above that hospital sits a Zhejiang University School of Medicine page that covers seven clinical sites, including Shaw, a dental hospital, a children’s hospital, a women’s hospital, and the first, second, and fourth affiliated hospitals. It allows at most twelve weeks, asks for six months of planning, and says an unfinished visiting-student process is a denial. It claims more than 100 medical students, residents, fellows, and nurses a year from more than 50 countries. Do not add that “100+” to Shaw’s “more than 50.” They are different sentences about different pools. The school page is served on http, so the source list links Shaw’s https pages and leaves the school URL in this paragraph only.

What the File Contains, and Who Sends It

Shaw’s elective page asks you to download the form and email it to wangmy@srrsh.com with a CV and a recommendation letter from your university. The school-level page asks for an official transcript, a letter from the dean or a senior student-affairs officer, a CV, a letter of intent, and the visiting-student form. It says questions can go to the hospital coordinator or to rockygwl@zju.edu.cn and global_zusm@zju.edu.cn at 866 Yuhangtang Road, Hangzhou. Partner-school students are told to start with the home coordinator, not with a personal email that skips the school. Self-applicants are told the route exists and can still be denied.

Send one complete file, not a trail of missing PDFs. The school page is explicit that failure to finish the process denies the elective. Shaw’s first-come line means an early complete file beats a late complete file, not that an early incomplete file is safe. After a yes, Shaw tells you to book housing. The school page tells you to hold funds for all costs, buy insurance, and apply for the visa using the acceptance letter the university provides. DragonTrail does not issue that letter and does not see the hospital’s inbox.

Free at One Hospital Is Not Free at Seven

Shaw’s English questions answer “what is my financial responsibility” by saying the elective rotation, if accepted, is free of charge, and that accommodation, meals, transportation, and anything outside the programme are yours. Health insurance is “completely up to you.” The Chinese page 境外人员实习进修 does not repeat the fee waiver in the short text we read. It gives the 7th-floor address and the same coordinator email. The school-level page says students need sufficient personal funds to cover any and all expenses and are responsible for all insurance. If you are writing only to Shaw, quote Shaw’s answer back to Shaw and ask them to confirm it still applies to your month. If you are writing to another affiliated hospital, do not promise yourself Shaw’s waiver.

The floor disagreement is practical. English questions: Floor 4, Tower VII, Qingchun Campus, and Mrs. Amy Wang’s mobiles 0571-8600 8867 and 188 6715 3204. Chinese page and the university list: 7th Floor, Tower VII, 3 East Qingchun Road, phone 86-571-86006687. Arrive on a weekday because the centre is unstaffed at the weekend. From Hangzhou Xiaoshan airport the hospital suggests the metro, or a more expensive taxi. From Shanghai Pudong it suggests the high-speed train to Hangzhou and then taxi or metro. Those are the hospital’s directions, not a DragonTrail transfer. We do not meet you at the kerb. That kind of ground service is outside this study page.

Observation and “the Same Programme” Must Both Stay Visible

Shaw uses two descriptions that a careless summary would collapse. One is “clinical observation and rotations” and “through observation and study.” The other is that participants will be in the same programme as the other medical students of the department. The second sentence can sound like full clinical duty. The page never lists procedures, prescriptions, or unsupervised patient contact. It says the hospital will find an English-speaking instructor and, at the end, write an evaluation to your school’s requirements. Hold the evaluation as a letter about learning. It is not a statement that you practised medicine in China, and your home school decides whether it counts.

Pediatrics is an exception on the Shaw elective page. Do not plan a children’s block there from this text. A minimum of two weeks in a single department applies before you rotate. Students still in school are asked to come without a spouse or friend living with them. Graduates may ask about a spouse. That housing rule is not a visa for your family. The university page’s twelve-week cap and Shaw’s “less than three months” are close and not identical. Fit your dates inside the page you were accepted to, not inside a blend.

An Elective Does Not Replace a Degree or a Job

Final-year status is the point. Shaw will not take a student earlier than the last two years of medical school. A pre-med visitor, a high-school student, and a first-year student are outside that line. The elective does not award the six-year MBBS and does not cost RMB 75,000, because it is not that degree. It also does not hire you. More than 50 visitors a year is the hospital’s description of volume, not a vacancy list. First come, first served is a queue for a learning period, not an employment contract.

Credit is your school’s decision. Ask the dean before you fly whether a Shaw evaluation will be signed into your transcript. Zhejiang tells partner students to use that coordinator for a reason. A week that feels educational can still be refused as credit when you get home. DragonTrail cannot certify the week. We also cannot tell you that English on the ward will match the instructor’s English. The hospital promises to look for an English-speaking attending. It does not promise that patients or the nursing station will brief you in English.

Write the Request to the Host, Not to Us

If you are in the final two years and your school will support a letter, the public path is the hospital’s form to wangmy@srrsh.com, sent about six months ahead, with dates that respect a two-week minimum and a stay under three months unless the university page’s twelve-week cap is the one that applies to your site. If you are earlier in the degree, do not ask us to make an exception. The hospital printed the year rule. If you need a degree instead, read the MBBS page. If you need to know whether the weeks let you practise later, they do not. Recognition is a separate question and the answer is not an elective.

Our buttons do not submit the hospital form. Find a Suitable Program organises study routes. Request Guidance can help you check whether you are describing an elective, an observership, or a degree. Say your year of medical school and whether a dean must nominate you. Do not attach patient lists.

These pages were read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Tuition, language rules, and application windows change, and the 2026 windows on the school pages had already closed. A CUCAS card is CUCAS’s listing. The World Directory of Medical Schools did not return a directory page. The Campus China address named in a scholarship paragraph did not open. A hospital email printed by a university is that university’s contact. It is not a placement DragonTrail has confirmed, and it is not permission to examine a patient.

FAQ

Can DragonTrail book a clinical elective in China?

No. Shaw and Zhejiang University publish their own coordinators and say the file can be denied. An email to wangmy@srrsh.com is a request to the hospital. We do not hold dates and we are not the partner school.

Who is eligible at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital?

Medical students in the final two years, and other healthcare students near the end of the degree. The training page also names residents, nurses, and pharmacists. Earlier students are outside the printed rule. Pediatrics is excluded on the elective page.

How long is the elective?

Shaw prints at least two weeks and less than three months, with two weeks in one department before a move. The university page prints a maximum of twelve weeks and asks you to allow six months for the paperwork. Use the cap on the acceptance you actually receive.

Is it free?

Shaw’s English questions say the rotation fee is waived if you are accepted, and that housing, meals, and transport are yours. The university page says you cover all expenses and insurance. Do not apply the waiver to every affiliated hospital.

Will I examine and treat patients?

The page says observation and study, and also that you join the department’s student programme. It does not list procedures you may perform. Until the acceptance letter defines the work, assume you do not have independent patient contact. This guide will not widen that.

Which floor do I go to?

The English questions say Floor 4, Tower VII, Qingchun Campus. The Chinese page says 7th Floor, Tower VII, 3 East Qingchun Road. Both were live on 29 October 2026. Confirm with the coordinator before you travel, and arrive on a weekday.

Does the elective count toward my degree at home?

Only if your home school says so. Shaw will write an evaluation to your school’s requirements after the period. Zhejiang tells partner students to go through the home coordinator. DragonTrail cannot award the credit.

What should I prepare six months ahead?

The form, a CV, a university recommendation or dean’s letter, a transcript if the school-level file applies, dates inside the printed length, and a plan to pay for housing. A passport and a visa come after an acceptance letter exists. We do not produce that letter.

Compare study routes, or tell us the credential, the teaching language, and whether a home school must nominate you. Neither button admits you to a medical school, confirms a hospital, or licenses you to practice.
