Semester Internships
Semester internships in China run into the 180-day line that separates X2 from X1. A term written into a Chinese school’s teaching plan is not the same thing as a semester at a company, and DragonTrail enrolls you in neither.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
No employer offered a semester seat. 北京大学’s senior visiting page, stamped 2023-02-01, is a one-year research stay with a March application window, not a company semester. Article 45 of the 教育部 order defines long study as more than 180 days. Count days before you assume a semester is “short.”
At a Glance
| Who this is for | Students hoping to spend a semester in a placement in China. Count days before you call the term short. |
|---|---|
| Clock | Short study is no more than 180 days. A September-to-January stay can cross that line. 北京大学’s usual senior visit is one year, with applications in March. |
| Money | If you are on the senior visiting page, the printed tuition is 30,000 or 34,000 RMB a year, plus 400 RMB to apply. That is not an internship wage. |
| Who decides | The Chinese school writes the plan and the admission notice. The consulate stamps X1 or X2. DragonTrail does not. |
| Papers | X1: admission letter and JW201 or JW202, then a residence permit within 30 days. X2: admission notice, and form DQ if it applies. |
| Outcome | Credit only if the Chinese school’s plan says so. No job is attached. Registration can fail if insurance is missing. |
| Easy to mix up | Calling a company semester “short study” without counting to 180 days, or using the six-month line from 北京大学 as if it were the embassy’s line. |
| Worked example | A first semester cannot meet the one-year condition for off-campus work-study. Term-time work-study, where it applies, is generally 8 hours a week. |
| What we do not do | DragonTrail does not enroll you for a semester, issue JW202, or confirm a company will take you for the term. |
Count Days Before You Say Short
Article 45 says short-term study is no more than 180 days, including that day, and long-term study is more than 180 days. A semester that runs from early September to late January can cross 180 days once you add arrival and the residence-permit clock. The Sweden note matches that split: X1 over 180 days, X2 at or under it. 北京大学’s pages say “over 6 months,” which is a different sentence. Do not collapse the two clocks.
A Teaching Term Needs the School’s Plan
Article 20 places 教学实习 inside the higher-education school’s teaching plan. A home university that wants credit still needs the Chinese school to own the plan. Article 16 says the student follows the school’s courses and sits the exams the school sets. A semester of office hours that never appears in that plan is not Article 20. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.
The March Window Is for a Fall Year
北京大学’s senior visiting page says applications are open from 1 March to 31 March each year, and the fall semester usually begins in September. The usual duration printed on the program list is one year, which is not a single semester. The page says the exact enrollment date is on the admission notice. A student who wants only September to January is asking for a shorter stay than the “usual” line, and the page does not promise that shorter stay.
X1 Means a Residence Permit Within 30 Days
If the semester is long enough for X1, the Sweden note says the holder applies for a residence permit within 30 days of entry. Order 42 Article 36 says the same when the visa requires it. 北京大学 tells admitted students to do that step through the International Students Division. Papers are an admission letter and JW201 or JW202. DragonTrail does not hold those forms. A semester plan without them is not an entry plan.
Work-Study During a Semester Stays Small
During the teaching term, the 2021 cap is generally 8 hours a week and 40 a month, not a second full-time job beside classes. Off-campus work-study still needs the one-year enrollment line, so a student in their first semester cannot use it. The activity must not crowd out study. A “semester internship” that fills every afternoon may fail the school’s own academic bar, which the measures say the school sets.
Insurance Comes Before Registration
Article 40 requires insurance. 北京大学’s senior page says students who have not bought the insurance are not registered, and that insurance can be bought at registration. A semester that never reaches registration has no transcript. Fees on that page, if you are in that program, are 400 RMB to apply, then 30,000 RMB a year in humanities or 34,000 RMB in science, on a page stamped 2023-02-01. Those are not a company salary.

FAQ
Is a semester always an X2 stay?
No. Article 45 and the Sweden note use 180 days. A semester plus arrival can pass that line and fall under X1. Count the days on the admission notice. Do not assume.
Can my home university award the credit alone?
Article 20 puts teaching practice in the Chinese higher-education school’s plan. A letter from home does not replace that plan. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.
When does Peking University take senior visiting applications?
The page stamped 2023-02-01 says 1 March to 31 March, for a fall start that usually falls in September. The usual duration on the program list is one year. A shorter semester is not promised.
What happens in the first 30 days?
X1 holders apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry. 北京大学 points admitted students to the International Students Division for that step. DragonTrail does not file it.
Can I intern full time beside a full course load?
The term-time work-study cap is generally 8 hours a week and 40 a month, and only for students the measures cover. A first semester also fails the one-year off-campus condition.
What did the senior page charge?
400 RMB to apply, non-refundable, then 30,000 RMB a year in humanities or 34,000 RMB a year in science. The page time is 2023-02-01. It is not a 2026 invoice and not a DragonTrail fee.
Does insurance matter for a semester?
Article 40 says a student who does not insure is not admitted. 北京大学 says students without insurance are not registered. Buy what the school names. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.
What should I confirm before I call it a semester internship?
Confirm the day count, whether the hours sit in the teaching plan, who supervises them, and whether any pay is work-study or a job. A missing answer means the semester is not confirmed.
