Internships in China

Internships in China are a word people use for three different permissions. Confirm current requirements and availability directly with the relevant institution.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

Request current fees and any funding terms directly from the provider; no amount is confirmed here. 教育部 order 42 and the 2021 勤工助学 measures are the rules. The Sweden embassy note dated 2026/10/12 names F, X1, X2, and Z. It does not name an internship visa.

ClockTeaching practice follows a school plan. Work-study, where it applies, is generally 8 hours a week and 40 a month, or 16 and 80 on vacation.
MoneyWork-study pay, when the measures apply, follows local minimums and a written agreement. Request current fees and any funding terms directly from the provider; no amount is confirmed here. DragonTrail has no wage.
Who decidesThe Chinese school, the consulate, and the local exit-entry office. Not DragonTrail.
PapersTeaching plan, or a work-study agreement plus a residence-permit annotation, or a work-permit notification for Z. We issue none of these.
OutcomeNo conversion into a job is stated on the cited sources. A school certificate, if any, is the school’s.
Easy to mix upAn unpaid month can still be employment that Article 30 does not allow. Unpaid is not a free pass.
Worked exampleA second-year student at a Chinese university can ask that university about the 2021 off-campus conditions. A first-week arrival cannot meet the one-year line.
What we do not doDragonTrail does not introduce you to an employer, sign a placement, or tell a consulate which sticker to use.

Internship Is Not a Visa Name

Search the Sweden note dated 2026/10/12 and you will not find a category called internship. You will find F for exchanges, visits, and study tours, X1 and X2 for study split at 180 days, and Z for work. A host that says “intern” still has to point at one of those, or at a teaching plan inside a school. DragonTrail will not pick the category for you, and a consulate can refuse the one a host prefers.

Teaching Practice Is the School’s Plan

Article 20 says a higher-education school organizes 教学实习 and 社会实践 according to its teaching plan, and the place must follow national rules. That is the closest official sentence to a credit-bearing internship. It belongs to a student the school enrolled. It is not a favor a foreign university can declare on its own letterhead. If the Chinese school has not put the hours in the plan, Article 20 has not started.

Spare-Time Work-Study Is Capped

The 2021 measures exclude teaching practice from the definition of 勤工助学. What they do cover is spare-time work, generally 8 hours a week and 40 a month, or 16 and 80 in a vacation, for a student at a degree-teaching higher-education school. Off campus, the student must already have studied at that school for more than one continuous year, be 18 or older, and hold a study residence document with more than six months left. Then the exit-entry office has to annotate the permit within ten days.

A Company Desk Is Work Until Shown Otherwise

A full-time month at a company is not described by the 8-hour cap. Article 30 forbids employment and business during study. The Z papers on the Sweden note start with a Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit, for stays over 90 days and also, as a separate list, for stays under 90 days. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution. Until a named host shows one, there is no internship to accept.

The measures talk about lawful pay for 勤工助学. On-campus fixed posts are monthly, and 40 hours of pay should generally not fall below the local minimum living allowance. Temporary posts may follow the local minimum hourly wage. Off-campus pay is agreed in writing and should not fall below the local minimum wage. Unpaid labor is not given a special blessing. If a host will not say whether the month is paid, the page you need has not been written yet.

No Job Is Promised at the End

None of the cited sources says an internship converts into employment. Article 30 points the other way for a student: no employment and no business while the study rules apply. A certificate, if any, comes from the school under Article 21, not from DragonTrail. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution. Ask the host for the supervisor’s name, the hours, the pay line, and the visa category before you buy a ticket.

These pages were read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). A fee, an hour cap, and an application window belong to the office named in the link. If a date has passed, or a line on a visa note looks incomplete, the page says so. None of this is a placement or a group visit DragonTrail can reserve, and none of it is legal advice.

FAQ

Are internships in China a visa category?

Not on the Sweden embassy note dated 2026/10/12. That note names F, X1, X2, and Z, among others. It does not name an internship visa. The embassy decides the category. This page is not legal advice.

Can my home university’s letter create the internship?

A foreign university’s letter is not Article 20. Teaching practice is organized by the Chinese higher-education school under its own plan. If that school has not written the hours in, the placement has not started.

How many hours can a student work?

Where the 2021 measures apply, generally 8 hours a week and 40 a month, or 16 and 80 in winter or summer vacation. Those caps are for 勤工助学, not for a full-time company week.

Is an unpaid internship allowed?

The measures describe paid spare-time work. Article 30 forbids employment and business during study. An unpaid company month is not automatically allowed. Ask which rule the host is using. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.

What must happen within ten days?

For off-campus work-study, the student applies within ten days to the local exit-entry office to annotate the residence permit with the unit and the period. Without that note, the measures say the activity is not allowed.

Does DragonTrail hold internship seats?

No. No placement or host availability is confirmed here; contact the institution before making travel arrangements. There is no company, no stipend, and no supervisor on this route. The buttons on the page do not enroll you.

What is the one-year condition?

Off-campus work-study asks that the student has already studied continuously for more than one year at the current Chinese school, as a 本专科生, 研究生, 进修生, or 研究学者. A new arrival does not meet that line.

What should I ask before I fly?

Ask for the supervisor’s name, the weekly hours, whether the month is in the teaching plan or is work-study, whether it is paid, and which visa the invitation supports. If any answer is missing, treat the month as unconfirmed.
