Internship and Research Authorization

Internship and research authorization in China is a set of official pages, not a letter DragonTrail can sign. The 2017 order, the 2021 work-study measures, and the Sweden embassy visa note dated 2026/10/12 say different things. A consulate decides the sticker.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

This page is not legal advice and not an application. 教育部、外交部、公安部令第42号 and 教外厅〔2021〕2号 are the education rules cited here. The embassy note is one mission’s English instruction, dated 2026/10/12, not a rule for every consulate. The Z reminder, as fetched, prints “000 days.” That string is not a length of stay.

At a Glance

Who this is forAnyone asking whether an internship or a research month is allowed. The answer depends on which official sentence matches the activity.
ClockWork-study hours, where they apply: generally 8 a week and 40 a month, or 16 and 80 in a vacation. Study splits at 180 days. 北京大学 also prints six months.
MoneyNo DragonTrail authorization fee. School fees, if any, are the school’s RMB list. Research scholar fee on a 2023-stamped page is 3,320 RMB a month, paid by the visitor.
Who decidesThe school, the local exit-entry office, and the consulate. Not DragonTrail. This page is not legal advice.
PapersTeaching plan, or work-study agreement plus a residence annotation, or admission notice and JW201 or JW202, or an F invitation, or a work-permit notification. We issue none of these.
OutcomeA sticker and a school paper that match the activity, if those offices agree. Not a job and not a promise that they will agree.
Easy to mix upUsing one word, internship, to cover teaching practice, work-study, a research admission, and a job.
Worked exampleA second-year student asks their Chinese university about off-campus work-study. A visitor with no enrollment asks which of F, X2, or Z a consulate will even consider. We do not answer that for them.
What we do not doDragonTrail does not sign an authorization, annotate a residence permit, or tell a consulate what to stamp.

Read the Category Before the Story

People say “internship” and expect one permission. Confirm current requirements and availability directly with the relevant institution. Article 20 is 教学实习 and 社会实践 in a higher-education teaching plan. The 2021 measures are spare-time 勤工助学 and they exclude that teaching practice. Article 30 forbids employment, 经商, and other commercial activity during study. The Sweden note’s Z category is work and asks for a work-permit notification. Pick the sentence that matches what you will actually do, then ask the office that administers it. We will not pick it for you.

Who the Work-Study Measures Cover

The measures apply to higher-education schools that teach degree programs. Off campus you must be 18 or older, hold a study residence document with more than six months left, and have studied continuously for more than one year at the current school as a 本专科生, 研究生, 进修生, or 研究学者. Within ten days you ask the local exit-entry office to annotate the residence permit. Without the note, off-campus work-study is not allowed.

Study Visas and the 180-Day Line

Article 35 says you apply for an X1 or X2 visa before entry, according to the length of study, with the school’s admission notice and the education-authority filing proof. Article 45 defines short-term as no more than 180 days and long-term as more than 180 days. The Sweden note matches that split and adds JW201 or JW202 for X1, form DQ for X2 if it applies, and a residence permit within 30 days for X1 holders. 北京大学’s pages say “over 6 months” and “under 6 months.” Six months and 180 days are both printed. They are not the same sentence. The consulate stamps one of them.

F, M, and Z Are Not Study Stickers

F, on the Sweden note, is exchanges, visits, study tours, and other activities. The invitation should include your identity, the purpose, the dates, the places, your link to the inviter, the source of funds, and the inviter’s name, phone, address, stamp, and signature. M is commercial and trade activity, with papers from a trade partner. Z is work. For stays over 90 days and, on a separate list, under 90 days, one document is the Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit. A research visit that is really a job does not stay on X2 because someone prefers a student sticker.

Research Desks Still Need the School’s Paper

北京大学’s research scholar and senior visiting pages, stamped 2023-02-01, tell admitted students to take the admission letter and JW202 to a consulate, and to use X1 or X2 according to the six-month line on those pages. They also require insurance or registration stops. None of that is a national internship permit. A professor’s welcome email is not JW202. DragonTrail does not issue JW201, JW202, or a residence-permit annotation. If the school will not issue the paper, you do not have the authorization those pages describe.

What This Page Refuses to Do

We refuse to say that a plan is legal, that a consulate will agree, or that a figure from 2023 is this year’s bill. We refuse to treat “000 days” on the fetched Z reminder as a real stay. We refuse to hide a job inside the word internship. Article 44 lets education authorities restrict a school’s international enrollment for recruiting violations, which is a reminder that the school is regulated. Your next step is the school’s international office, the local exit-entry administration, or the consulate that will take your file. The buttons below do not file anything.

Sources

These pages were read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). A fee, an hour cap, and an application window belong to the office named in the link. If a date has passed, or a line on a visa note looks incomplete, the page says so. None of this is a placement or a group visit DragonTrail can reserve, and none of it is legal advice.

FAQ

Is this page legal advice?

No. It quotes 教育部 order 42, the 2021 work-study measures, and the Chinese embassy in Sweden visa note dated 2026/10/12. A consulate, an exit-entry office, and the school decide. DragonTrail does not.

What are the work-study hour caps?

Generally no more than 8 hours a week and 40 a month, and in winter or summer vacation generally no more than 16 a week and 80 a month. They apply only to students the 2021 measures cover, and they exclude teaching practice.

What is required before off-campus work-study?

Age 18 or older, a study residence document with more than six months left, more than one continuous year at the current school, and a residence-permit annotation from the local exit-entry office within ten days. Without the annotation, the activity is not allowed.

What is the difference between 180 days and six months?

Article 45 and the Sweden note use 180 days for short and long study. 北京大学’s senior and research pages say over or under 6 months. Both are printed. They are not reconciled here.

Which paper does X1 need?

On the Sweden note, an admission letter and form JW201 or JW202, both original and copy. Holders apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry. DragonTrail does not issue the forms.

What must an F invitation contain?

The Sweden note asks for the visitor’s identity, the purpose, dates, places, the link to the inviter, the source of funds, and the inviter’s name, phone, address, stamp, and signature. A thin invitation can fail. We cannot sign one.

Why does the Z note say 000 days?

That is how the sentence appeared when the page was fetched on 29 October 2026. We do not treat 000 as a length of stay. Z still asks for a work-permit notification on both the over-90-day list and the under-90-day list.

Can you authorize my internship?

No. The buttons on this site do not file a visa, annotate a permit, or admit you to a school. Take the matching paper to the office that actually issues it.

Compare study routes, or tell us the season, the field, and whether you need a teaching placement, a research visit, or help reading an authorization rule. Neither button enrolls you, finds an employer, or decides a visa category.
