Academic Fieldwork

Academic fieldwork in China is a teaching-plan question, not a tour you can add to a weekend. Article 20 says the higher-education school organizes the practice and the place must follow national rules. No placement or host availability is confirmed here; contact the institution before making travel arrangements.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

No archaeology unit, ecology station, village committee, or archive printed a fieldwork week that we could cite. 社会实践 in Article 20 is not a private trip with a professor’s verbal blessing. The 2021 measures exclude teaching practice from 勤工助学, so the hour cap is the wrong tool for a field course.

At a Glance

Who this is forStudents whose course includes time outside a classroom in China. The school’s plan and the rules on the place come before the trip.
ClockField courses are not the 8-hour work-study cap. Short study is no more than 180 days. An F invitation should name the places.
MoneyRequest current fees and any funding terms directly from the provider; no amount is confirmed here. Schools that charge students publish RMB items under Article 14. DragonTrail has no fieldwork price.
Who decidesThe Chinese school that owns the teaching plan, and whatever authority governs the site. Not DragonTrail.
PapersA plan that names the place, plus the visa paper that matches the purpose. For a short group, an Article 38 agreement.
OutcomePractice hours the school records, if you are enrolled and the plan says so. Not a publication and not a permit we can show.
Easy to mix upTreating a professor’s email as the teaching plan, or treating a field day as spare-time work-study.
Worked exampleA class that wants a week outside campus should ask the Chinese school whether the site is in the plan and allowed. A private trip is not Article 20.
What we do not doDragonTrail does not clear a dig, a village stay, a factory floor, or an archive appointment.

The Place Has to Be Allowed

Article 20 does two things. It tells the higher-education school to organize 教学实习 and 社会实践 according to the teaching plan. It also says the choice of place must follow national rules. A beautiful county is not automatically an allowed place. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.

A Verbal Yes Is Not the Plan

A professor’s email that says “come along” is not the school’s teaching plan. Article 15 says the school folds international students’ teaching into the university’s overall plan and assigns suitable teachers. If the fieldwork is not in that plan, Article 20 has not started. Your home university’s syllabus does not replace the Chinese school’s plan. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.

Fieldwork Is Not the Work-Study Cap

The 2021 measures say 勤工助学 does not include teaching internships and social practice the school organizes under the teaching plan. A field course is that excluded category, or it is something else entirely. Do not describe a dawn-to-dusk dig as “within 8 hours” in order to make it sound permitted. If the days are work for a company, you are in Z territory on the Sweden note, not in a field course.

Groups in the Field Use Article 38

If the fieldwork is a short group, Article 38 requires an agreement between the Chinese school and the foreign sending unit before the school accepts the group. For primary and secondary schools the sending unit must also send a guardian with the minors. A university field party is not automatically that primary-school rule, but it still needs the agreement if the school is accepting a 团组. DragonTrail does not sign it. No field party was confirmed.

Visas Follow the Purpose You Can Prove

Study of no more than 180 days points at X2 and an admission notice. Longer study points at X1, JW201 or JW202, and a residence permit within 30 days. A visit or study tour points at F and an invitation that states the places to be visited. Fieldwork that is really employment points at Z. The invitation’s “places” line matters: a vague “China” is weaker than the sites you will actually enter. We cannot write that invitation.

Insurance and Access Are Not Optional Extras

Article 40’s insurance rule still applies if you are an international student at the school. A field site does not cancel it. Article 39’s medical check can apply at entry to the school. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution. There is no DragonTrail fieldwork rate. Until a school names the site, the dates, the supervisor, and the rule that allows the place, the fieldwork is unconfirmed.

These pages were read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). A fee, an hour cap, and an application window belong to the office named in the link. If a date has passed, or a line on a visa note looks incomplete, the page says so. None of this is a placement or a group visit DragonTrail can reserve, and none of it is legal advice.

FAQ

Can I do fieldwork anywhere my professor suggests?

Article 20 says the place must follow national rules and the practice must sit in the school’s teaching plan. A suggestion is not that plan. No site was cleared on this page.

Is fieldwork the same as work-study?

No. The 2021 measures exclude teaching internships and social practice under the teaching plan from the definition of 勤工助学. The hour cap is the wrong label for a field course.

What if the group is short?

Article 38 says a school may take a short-term 团组 only after an agreement with the foreign sending unit. Primary and secondary groups also need an accompanying guardian. DragonTrail does not sign the agreement.

Which visa fits fieldwork?

It depends on the purpose you can prove. Study uses X1 or X2. A study tour uses F, and the invitation should name the places. Work uses Z. The embassy decides. This is not legal advice.

Are there fieldwork fees?

Confirm current requirements and availability directly with the relevant institution. If a school charges you, Article 14 says it publishes the items in RMB. DragonTrail does not add a vehicle or guide rate.

Does insurance still apply in the field?

If you are an international student, Article 40 still requires insurance. A site outside the campus does not cancel that sentence. Confirm the applicable local requirements with the receiving institution.

Can DragonTrail book the site?

No. No archaeology unit, station, village, or archive was confirmed. We do not hold a permit or a date.

What should the school put in writing?

The site, the dates, the supervisor, the rule that allows the place, and whether the hours are in the teaching plan. Without those lines the fieldwork is unconfirmed.
