Public bus to Mutianyu: 916 Express from Dongzhimen to Huairou, then a local Huairou connection. Lowest fare, more navigation.
Public bus to Badaling: 877 from Deshengmen remains a transport option; check current timing on the day.
First and last bus times change by season — verify before travel.

Rail — Badaling only

The S2 suburban railway serves Badaling from Huangtudian. Schedules vary by season, weekend and holiday period, so check the current timetable before travel. Badaling also has high-speed rail access.

Rail is useful for Badaling, not as a general Great Wall transport answer.
Allow connection time from central Beijing to the rail station.
Do not treat train frequency as fixed — official notices change by date and season.

Taxi or DiDi to the Great Wall

DiDi can be straightforward for the outbound journey to Mutianyu or Badaling. The return is less predictable because Great Wall sections are outside Beijing's dense urban ride-hailing area, especially during busy periods or later in the day. If your return time matters, arrange the round trip in advance.

Outbound to Mutianyu or Badaling: usually workable.
Return: plan deliberately; do not assume a car will appear on demand.
Jinshanling and Gubeikou: generally better with pre-arranged road transport than ad-hoc taxi.
