What a Beijing calligraphy class is
A Beijing calligraphy class for beginners is 60 to 90 minutes with an instructor in a private studio or siheyuan courtyard. The format: instructor demonstrates one character (often your name in Chinese or a simple word like 'fu' for fortune), you trace it on red paper using brush, ink, paper, and inkstone (the 'four treasures'), then write your own version to take home. No prior experience needed.
- Drive time from Beijing: Central Beijing studios or siheyuan courtyards
- Typical visit style: 60-90 min standalone; 3-4 hr combined with hutong + dumpling
- Difficulty: Easy - instructor walks every step
- Crowds: Private small-group format
- Best for: First-time visitors wanting one quiet cultural moment; Couples, families with kids 7+; Travellers comparing class options
- Less ideal for: Travellers who want pure cooking / hands-on without paper work

What will I actually write?
Beginners write one or two characters. Most popular: 'fu' (fortune - one character, easy strokes, the most-photographed result), your name transliterated into Chinese, or a short auspicious phrase like 'wan shi ru yi' (everything goes well). The instructor picks based on your interest and ability. Each character takes 5-10 minutes to write properly.
- Most popular: 'fu' (fortune) on red paper.
- Your name in Chinese characters.
- Short auspicious phrases.
- Instructor adjusts to your interest.
What does the instructor do?
Demonstrates posture (sit upright, brush vertical), grip (light, not tight), stroke order (top-left to bottom-right, horizontal before vertical), then writes the chosen character at the front. You trace the same character a few times to feel the rhythm, then write your own. The instructor circulates, adjusts your grip, and writes their signature on your best version.
- Posture demo: 5 min.
- Stroke order: 5-10 min.
- Tracing practice: 15-20 min.
- Your own version: 15-20 min.
- Instructor signature: end of class.
Is it really 'no experience needed'?
Yes. The class is designed for first-timers - 80% of students have never held a Chinese brush before. The fold-grip and stroke order are explained from zero. The take-home version won't look like an instructor's calligraphy but it will look like yours, which is the point.
- 80% of students are first-time.
- Beginner-friendly: yes.
- Mandarin not required - instructor uses visual demo.
- Ages 7+ can manage the brush.
Common calligraphy class mistakes
Gripping the brush like a Western pen
Vertical brush, light grip. The instructor will correct, but knowing this in advance helps.
Trying to write too fast
Brush calligraphy is slow. A single character takes 5-10 minutes to write properly.
Skipping the tracing phase
Tracing teaches the stroke rhythm. Skip it and your free-writing will be off.
Forgetting to take home the work
Studios provide a paper tube. Don't leave without your characters.
