Summer Camps in China

A summer camp in China is whatever an organizer will still run in June, July, or August for the age you name, with a bed or a daily handover written down. It is not a season DragonTrail sells, and a university’s July course is not automatically a child’s camp.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail has no summer intake. Hutong School’s Beijing page still says Camp 2025 beside undated June and July lines and a from-price of 4,250 RMB. NYU Shanghai’s dates and USD 8,500 fee are for Summer 2026 university students. Read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

Summer Is a Season, Not a Standard Week

Summer camp, in parent mail, means “the long school holiday.” Organizers mean a product with a start line, a housing rule, and a headcount. Those are not the same object. A family already living in 北京 may only need mornings. A family flying in needs airport pickup, a bed, and a visa story that matches the length of the stay. Hutong’s 2026 page splits the day into a morning class and an afternoon in the city. That shape is useless if your child must be collected at 12:30 by a grandparent who cannot do the Great Wall.

Start with the weeks you can actually protect. A start date printed without a year is not a booking. Hutong’s Beijing page lists 16 June, 30 June, 14 July, and 28 July for day and half-day lines, and only the two July lines for what it calls full camp. The sentences around those lines still say Chinese Camp 2025. Ask for an email that states 2026 or 2027 in digits before you hold flights.

Two Hutong Pages, Two Years

The page titled Chinese Summer Camp for Kids and Teens 2026 says students in 北京 or 上海 start with Chinese class from 09:00 to 12:00, Monday to Friday, then lunch and the city. It says full-camp students stay in centrally located modern hotels with Wi-Fi and air conditioning, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and that staff pick students up at the airport. A later parent bullet on the same page says participants stay in a modern youth hostel. Hotel and hostel are different duty-of-care stories. The page also says an adult is present day and night and that parents get a weekly message with pictures.

The Beijing campus page, fetched the same morning, still invites readers to apply for Chinese Camp in 2025, repeats “Chinese Camp 2025” in the activity copy, and puts the price at one week from 4,250 RMB per person. The campus it names is a ten-minute walk from 东直门 Dongzhimen, Line 2 or Line 13, Exit C, at 东城区新中街乙12号. The published email is beijing@thatsmandarin.com and the phone is (+86) 10 8448 9799. We are not inferring a corporate chart from an email domain. We are saying the contact line on that page is the one to use when the two pages disagree.

University Julys That Look Like Camps

NYU Shanghai’s Summer 2026 Chinese Language Immersion runs Friday 29 May through Saturday 1 August 2026. Priority deadline 10 February, regular deadline 1 March. The fee is USD 8,500: tuition USD 5,440, administration USD 600 (the page says this includes international health insurance and scheduled trips), books USD 250, and a double-occupancy housing estimate of USD 2,210. Students pay airfare, daily meals, personal costs, and immigration. Housing in the dorm is required, move-in 29 May, move-out 1 August. The same page lists nine-week room rates of ¥9,615 for a triple studio, ¥12,965 for a double studio, and ¥15,035 for a double in a suite. Ask which housing figure the bill uses. The page is for students enrolled in an accredited university, with a language pledge and eight credits. It is a serious summer. It is not a children’s camp.

Princeton in Beijing’s Summer 2026 cost of attendance PDF bills USD 7,650 tuition, including a USD 500 non-refundable deposit, and USD 1,350 in fees that the sheet says cover accommodations, a partial meal plan, field trips, activities, internet, and local health insurance. Direct charges are USD 9,000. The sheet’s own indirect estimates — about USD 2,500 airfare, USD 315 visa, and smaller personal lines — bring the illustrated total to USD 12,345. That is a college budget with a partial meal plan, not a parent handover at a primary-school gate. The BIT fee sheet’s Beijing programs, 8–29 July 2026 at CNY 4,500, are English-medium and limited to ages 18 to 45. Put them beside summer planning for adults. Do not paste them into a twelve-year-old’s comparison.

Heat, Closures, and a Campus That Is Empty

July in 北京 and 上海 is hot, often wet, and sometimes poor air. A sports or outdoor afternoon needs an indoor backup the organizer will name. A language morning in an air-conditioned room is a different physical day from a Great Wall walk. The Hutong 2026 page lists the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the French Concession, and the Bund as the kind of trips students take. Those are real places and they are also long transfers with a group of children. Ask how the day changes when the heat warning is red, and whether the fee drops if the trip is cancelled.

International schools often close their campuses in July even when a camp rents a field. We did not find a 2026 public day-camp price on Western Academy of Beijing’s tuition page. What we found was annual school fees. If a coach says the camp uses a named school’s grounds, ask that school whether the letting is real for your dates. A 2019 magazine roundup of football camps is not a 2026 contract, so it is not repeated here as a price.

What a Summer Week Tries to Include

A readable summer quote separates class minutes, activity afternoons, meals, local transport, airport meeting, housing, insurance, and the visa letter. Hutong’s 2026 full-camp description bundles meals and in-China transport, including airport pickup, and says Wi-Fi exists at the accommodation and the school. It does not say the class hour is 45 or 50 minutes. The 2017 multi-city page, which is a winter-dated program and not a current summer, did say 50 minutes plus a 10-minute break. Do not borrow that minute count for 2026. Ask this year’s timetable.

BIT’s sheet is the opposite shape: CNY 4,500 covers tuition, on-campus accommodation, materials, insurance, company visits, and cultural tours, and it explicitly excludes meals, airport transfers, and personal expenses. Once paid, that sheet says the fee is non-refundable, and the program is cancelled below 20 students. A parent comparing “summer in Beijing” should put those exclusions next to Hutong’s included-meals sentence and notice they are not the same product.

The First Email for a Summer Week

Ask for the year, the format name, the age on the first morning, the pickup address, the latest return time, the night address if any, the name of the person who answers a parent call, and the line-item fee. If the reply quotes 4,250 RMB, ask whether that is half-day, day, or full camp, and whether 2026 replaced it. If the reply quotes USD 8,500, confirm the student is eligible for NYU Shanghai’s immersion and that you understand meals are extra.

DragonTrail can help you read that reply. We do not hold the June or July starts those schools printed, and we do not insure the child. When you are ready, use Find a Suitable Program for the wider study map, or Request Guidance with the age and the city. There is no summer calendar on this page.

FAQ

Does DragonTrail run a summer camp in China?

No. This page compares what other organizations published. Hutong School, NYU Shanghai, Princeton in Beijing, and the BIT fee sheet are their programs. Request Guidance does not reserve a July place.

Which Hutong dates are for 2026?

The kids and teens page is titled for 2026 but the schedule detail we fetched did not print numbered start dates. The Beijing page lists 16 June, 30 June, 14 July, and 28 July and still says Camp 2025. Ask the school to put the year in the offer.

Is USD 8,500 a children’s summer camp fee?

No. That is NYU Shanghai’s published Summer 2026 program fee for the Chinese Language Immersion, for students enrolled in an accredited university, with required dorm housing. Meals and airfare are extra on that page.

Why do two housing prices appear for the same NYU summer?

The fee breakdown includes a double-occupancy housing estimate of USD 2,210 inside the USD 8,500. A table on the same page lists nine-week rates of ¥9,615, ¥12,965, and ¥15,035 by room type. Ask the summer office which figure your invoice will use.

Are Beijing summers too hot for outdoor camps?

They can be. Heat and rain are ordinary in July. Ask for the indoor plan on a warning day, especially for sports. A morning language class in a cooled room is a different physical load from an afternoon on the Great Wall.

Does the 4,250 RMB price include the hotel?

The Beijing page does not say. It prints “1 week starts from 4,250 RMB/person” under a list of full, homestay, day, half-day, and tailor-made formats. The 2026 kids page describes hotels and meals for full camp and does not repeat 4,250 RMB. Get a format-specific quote.

Can a summer camp get my child a visa?

Only the school that issues an admission notice can support that file, and the consulate decides. Under 18, the Beijing guide requires a parent’s signature and a birth certificate. A two-week stay is not automatically an X1 residence-permit case.

What if the group is smaller than the school hoped?

Ask before you pay. The BIT sheet says a program with fewer than 20 students will be cancelled, and that a paid fee is non-refundable. Hutong’s pages we read do not state an equivalent rule. A small group can be better teaching or a cancelled week. Get the rule in writing.
