Residential Camps in China

A residential camp in China is a stay where the organizer, not the parent, has the child overnight. The useful questions are the address of the bed, who is awake at night, and what the fee says about illness. A weekly photo is not that plan.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail has no residential beds. Hutong School’s 2026 page says full-camp students stay in modern hotels and, in another bullet, a youth hostel, with an adult present day and night. It does not publish a staff ratio. Read 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

Residential Means the Camp Holds the Night

Once the child is not returning to you, every soft word in the brochure becomes a safety question. Who has the passport at 23:00. Who notices a fever. Who may approve a hospital. Who tells you, in which time zone, and how fast. Hutong’s 2026 parent section says an adult is always present day and night, the team answers questions, and parents receive a weekly message with pictures. Those sentences are better than silence. They are not a ratio, a name, or a medical protocol.

Read the product name on the quote. Hutong calls the live-in option full camp and limits the Beijing page’s full-camp start lines to July, specifically 30 June and 14 July, on a page that still says 2025. The 2026 kids page does not, in our fetch, attach numbered starts to the hotel description. Match the bed to a year before you buy the flight that delivers the child.

Hotel Versus Hostel on the Same Page

The 2026 page says full-camp students stay in centrally located modern hotels close to the school, with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a restaurant, and a common area. Further down, under advice to parents, it says participants are housed in a centrally located modern youth hostel with the same list of comforts. A hotel has a night desk and a legal duty to register foreign guests. A hostel can be excellent or casual, and the word does not tell you whether the camp has booked the whole floor or two beds in a mixed dorm. Ask for the property name and whether other guests who are not in the camp share the corridor.

The Beijing page’s from-price of 4,250 RMB per week is not attached to this bed. Full camp, if it includes three meals, airport pickup, and housing, is unlikely to be the cheapest line on a menu, but that is a guess and we will not print it as a price. Get the residential total as its own number. A 2017 page included shared apartments and a six-week multi-currency total. That page is history. Do not let it set the 2026 hostel expectation.

University Dorms Are a Different Contract

NYU Shanghai requires immersion students to live in its dormitory for the program dates, move-in Friday 29 May 2026, move-out Saturday 1 August 2026. The fee narrative includes an estimated USD 2,210 for double occupancy inside USD 8,500, and the housing table lists ¥9,615, ¥12,965, and ¥15,035 for nine weeks. Those rooms are for students the page says must be enrolled in an accredited university. The rules of a university residence — guests, nights out, a language pledge — are not the rules of a children’s hostel, and you should not ask a children’s camp to “follow NYU.”

The BIT sheet includes on-campus accommodation inside CNY 4,500 and excludes meals. The age band is 18 to 45. Princeton in Beijing’s fee of USD 1,350 is described as covering accommodations and a partial meal plan inside a college summer. If your child is under 18, these dorms are context for what adult programs cost, not options to click.

Ratios, Night Staff, and What Was Not Published

A ratio is a number: one awake adult for how many children, in the bedroom corridor, after lights out. Nothing we fetched from Hutong, NYU Shanghai, or the BIT sheet gives a children’s night ratio, because the first is silent and the others are not children’s camps. Do not fill the silence with “small group.” A teaching group of six in a classroom, which the old Hutong page mentioned for a different program, is not the number of sleepers per adult.

Ask whether the night adult is a teacher, a hired guard, or a university student, whether they sleep in the same flat, and whether they are allowed to leave for a meal. Ask what happens on the trip day if the group returns late. Ask for the phone that works when the child’s own phone is dead. Weekly pictures, which the 2026 page promises, can be kind and still arrive after a problem you needed the same night.

Write medical consent before the child flies: allergies, medicines, permission to see a doctor, and the hospital you would accept. The camp should tell you which clinic they actually use in 北京 or 上海, not “a nearby hospital.” Homesickness is normal and is not a reason to promise a perfect adjustment. The 2026 page says the team has experience with culture shock. That is a claim about their staff, not a result for your child. Ask at what point they will call you to discuss sending the child home, and who pays the flight change.

Passports and phones need a rule. Some camps lock passports in an office. You should know who can open that office at night. A child of sixteen is expected, under the exit-entry law, to be able to show a passport if police ask. A younger child still needs the document available. Insurance should name medical evacuation or honestly say it does not. Hutong’s 2017 page included medical insurance. The 2026 page we read did not repeat that inclusion in the fetched text. Ask this year’s policy.

What Parents Should Have in Writing

Before a deposit: property name, room type, whether the floor is camp-only, night ratio, the phone, the clinic, the refund if they move you from a hotel to a hostel, and the year of the start date. If the quote only says “accommodation included,” send it back. The 4,250 RMB line is not a residential quote until they say it is.

DragonTrail will not be the night adult and will not store the consent forms. We can help you see whether the paper answers the night. Use the supervision page for the parent-communication questions, Request Guidance to review a quote, and Find a Suitable Program if a residential week is the wrong length and what you need is a school year.

The First Night Is the Test of the Paper

Everything soft in a residential brochure becomes hard at check-in. The property name on the quote should match the door. If Hutong’s page said hotel in one paragraph and youth hostel in another, your email should have forced one of those words off the invoice before you flew. Ask, the afternoon you land, whether other guests who are not in the camp share the corridor and the bathroom. A camp-only floor is a different night from two beds in a mixed dorm, even when both have Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Ask where the passport will sleep. Ask who is in the building at 23:00 and how many children that person covers. If the answers change from the PDF, you are allowed to stop. A deposit argument is cheaper than a week of the wrong bed in 北京 or 上海.

Illness on night one is also common: travel, heat, a new meal. The clinic name should already be on your phone, not discovered from a front desk that may not be the camp. Hotels register foreign guests. If the door turns out not to be a hotel, the 24-hour police registration is due immediately, not after the weekly photo. None of this is DragonTrail’s night shift. NYU Shanghai’s dorm move-in on 29 May 2026 and BIT’s on-campus bed inside CNY 4,500 are adult housing rules, useful only as a reminder that institutions write dates and room types when they mean them. A youth quote that cannot match that plainness is not ready. Read the supervision page once more on the plane, then use the phone you tested, not a picture message, if the first night does not match the paper.

FAQ

Does DragonTrail house children on a residential camp?

No. We have no beds, no night staff, and no camp buildings. Housing sentences on this page are Hutong’s, NYU Shanghai’s, or the BIT sheet’s, and the last two are not children’s camps.

Is the accommodation a hotel or a hostel?

Hutong’s 2026 page says both. One section says modern hotels. A parent bullet says a modern youth hostel. Ask for the property name on your invoice. Do not pay against the friendlier noun.

What staff ratio should I expect?

The pages we read do not publish a children’s night ratio. “An adult is present” is not a number. Ask how many children that adult covers after lights out, and whether they are awake.

Does USD 8,500 buy a residential children’s camp?

No. It is NYU Shanghai’s Summer 2026 university immersion fee, with required dorms, for students enrolled in an accredited university. Meals are extra on that page.

Who registers a child staying in a hotel?

Hotels register foreign guests with the police as part of the hotel rules described in the exit-entry law. If the bed is not a hotel, the child or the host must register within 24 hours. Ask the camp which of those applies to the named property.

Are three meals included?

Hutong’s 2026 full-camp text says breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Confirm that sentence is on your quote, and list allergies. BIT’s residential-style campus fee excludes meals. The products are not interchangeable.

What if my child wants to leave early?

Ask the refund and the flight-change rule before you pay. BIT’s sheet says a paid fee is non-refundable. Hutong’s fetched pages do not state a residential refund. Get one in writing, including who may put the child on a plane.

Is a weekly photo enough contact?

It is a nice extra and a weak safety plan. You also want a phone that answers, a named night adult, and a rule for illness. Read the supervision page before you treat pictures as proof the week is fine.
