Camp Packing Checklist

Pack for the format, the season, and the bed on your quote, not for a poster of China. Documents ride in the cabin bag. The organizer’s own list, if they have one, outranks this page. DragonTrail does not ship a kit.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

This is a planning list, not proof a camp is running. Hutong’s 2026 page mentions Wi-Fi, meals for full camp, and city trips. It does not publish a packing PDF. Winter gear should wait until a winter quote exists. Retrieved 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

At a Glance

Cabin bagPassport, visa, consent, quote, address in Chinese, medicines, a spare outfit, phone numbers.
Match the formatA day camper does not need hostel towels. A residential camper does not need a daily metro card unless they said so.
SeasonJuly in 北京 and 上海 means heat, rain, and sun. A Great Wall day needs shoes that can do stairs.
WinterDo not pack for a winter camp you have not confirmed. The public cold-season page we found is dated 2017.
MealsIf they feed the child, still pack noted snacks only if the camp allows them. Allergies belong on the form, not only in the bag.
ElectronicsWi-Fi is mentioned for Hutong housing and school. Plugs and a local SIM are your problem unless the quote includes them.
MoneyA little cash and a card the child knows how to use, if they are old enough. Ask the camp’s rule.
What not to packValuables, a large drone, or medicines with no translated note. Ask before specialized sports kit.
DragonTrailWe do not inspect bags and we do not replace forgotten documents.

Pack for the Format, Not the Postcard

A half-day child needs a water bottle, a hat, and a pickup plan, not a week of formal clothes. A day child adds lunch only if the quote excludes it, and a layer for a cold bus. A residential child needs sleep clothes, a lock if the camp requires one, and enough days of clothes for the laundry rule they forgot to mention. A homestay child needs a small gift only if you want one, and shoes that can come off indoors. Start from the quote’s housing line. If that line still says both hotel and hostel, ask again before you buy a towel set.

Hutong’s 2026 full-camp text includes three meals and in-China transport, and housing with air conditioning and Wi-Fi. If your quote includes those, do not pack a second breakfast routine, and do pack a thin rain layer because trips are outside. If your quote is class-only, ignore their meal inclusion and pack the food plan you agreed. The 4,250 RMB from-price does not tell you which of these bags to build.

Documents in the Cabin Bag

Passport, the visa if one was issued, a copy of the birth certificate if the child is under 18, the consent form, the camp address in Chinese characters, and the phone list. Hutong’s Beijing page prints 东城区新中街乙12号4号楼3层 and a 东直门 description. Your child’s bed may not be that building. Print the address that is on the quote. University students heading to NYU Shanghai should carry that program’s housing instructions, which are a dorm move-in on 29 May 2026, not this youth list.

Keep a second copy of the passport page in a separate bag and a photo in your own phone. A child who is residential may have the passport stored by staff. Ask who holds it before you are surprised at the airport on the way home. Sixteen-year-olds are expected to be able to show a travel document if police ask, under the exit-entry rules we read. Younger children still need the document available to staff. Do not pack the only passport in checked luggage.

Clothes for Heat, Rain, and a Cold Classroom

July days are hot and classrooms are often cold. Pack a light shirt and a thin layer. Rain is normal. Shoes should handle a campus and, if the itinerary includes it, uneven wall steps. A smart outfit for a final show is enough if they mentioned a show. They may not have. Hutong’s activity examples include opera and calligraphy, which can mark clothes. Darker shirts survive ink better than white.

Winter packing is a different list: coat, gloves, indoor shoes, and a warm layer for rooms that may be unevenly heated. Do not buy that kit against the 2017 Hutong page. Buy it against a current quote that states December or January of a real year. 北京 cold and 上海 damp are not the same bag. The winter page explains why we will not pretend the season is on sale.

Medicines, Copies, and Checked Luggage

Carry inhalers, allergy medicine, and a day’s spare in the cabin bag, with a note in English and Chinese if you can get one from your own clinician. We are not writing prescriptions. Tell the camp the same list you pack. A bottle in the bag that the night adult does not know about is a risk. Liquids rules are the airline’s. A large sunscreen may need to be bought after arrival.

Checked bags get lost on the day you can least afford it. The first-night outfit, the device charger, and the documents stay with the child. A residential camp may have a shop nearby and may not. Ask. Specialized sports equipment waits for the coach’s list. We did not find a 2026 sports-camp fee, so we will not invent the boots specification either.

Residential Extras Versus a Day Camp

Residential extras are a lock, flip-flops for a shared bathroom, a small towel if they said the hostel does not provide one, and a modest amount of laundry soap. Ask about adapters. Chinese sockets and a laptop are the family’s problem unless the quote includes a device. WAB’s annual tuition page notes that students buy their own laptops. That is a school-year rule, useful only as a reminder not to assume a camp lends computers.

Day camp extras are a metro or taxi plan for the parent, a labeled water bottle, and a snack if lunch is late. The child should not carry a large sum of cash. A phone for an older child is a supervision choice you already made on the supervision page. Write the child’s name in the bag. A lost bottle is trivial. A lost passport is not, which is why the passport was never loose in that bag.

Confirm the List With the Organizer

Send this list back to the camp and ask what to delete. Their email may ban snacks, require a uniform, or demand a particular adapter. Their answer beats ours. If they have no list, the quote is thin and the supervision questions are probably thin too. A school that has hosted children before can say what families always forget.

DragonTrail will not mail a packing kit and will not meet the flight. Use Request Guidance if the quote and the bag disagree — for example, winter clothes for a July language week, or a hostel towel when they have now confirmed a hotel. Find a Suitable Program if packing has made it obvious you wanted a semester, not a camp. The bag follows the paper. It does not create the week.

Split the Bag the Night Before

The night before you fly, put documents, a day’s clothes, chargers, and the child’s medicines in the cabin bag, then lock the checked bag. A lost suitcase on a Sunday arrival should not leave a child without a passport copy or an inhaler. The quote’s address, including a Chinese line such as the Beijing school’s published street if that is truly your campus, belongs on paper as well as on a phone. Phones die. Hostels and hotels can both appear in a language school’s old and new pages, so the towel and the lock follow the property named in the latest email, not the property in a blog post.

July in 北京 or 上海 needs a light shirt, a layer for a cold classroom, rain shoes, and sunscreen you may have to buy after you land because of liquid rules. A winter coat does not go in the bag unless a current quote names a winter year. The 2017 Hutong winter is not that quote. Sports kit waits for a coach’s list we do not have. Calligraphy or opera, if the activity list includes them, can mark a shirt. They do not require a costume unless the organizer said so. Label the water bottle. Leave large cash out. A phone for an older teen is a supervision decision already made, not a packing fashion.

Send the final split back to the camp in one email and ask what to remove. Their ban on snacks or their demand for indoor shoes beats this page. DragonTrail will not ship a kit and will not stand at the belt. Request Guidance is for a bag that contradicts the quote. Find a Suitable Program is for a family that, while packing, realizes the child needed a semester. The suitcase does not reserve a seat.

These pages were read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Camp prices, start dates, and visa rules change. Use the current page from the organization that sets the rule. Where a page still shows an older year, or two housing descriptions that do not match, the note in the text says so.

FAQ

Is this the official packing list?

No. It is a parent checklist to compare with the organizer’s instructions. Hutong’s 2026 page does not publish a packing PDF. If their email conflicts with this page, follow their email for their camp.

What must stay in the cabin bag?

Passport, visa, consent, medicines, the address in Chinese, phone numbers, and a change of clothes. Do not put the only passport in checked luggage.

Should I pack for the Great Wall?

Only if your quote includes that trip. Then pack stair-capable shoes, water, and sun cover. A half-day with a noon handover does not need a hike kit. Confirm the itinerary.

Do I pack a towel and a lock?

Ask. The 2026 page says both hotel and youth hostel. A hotel often provides a towel. A hostel may not. Buy after they name the property, not before.

What about winter clothes?

Pack them when a current winter quote exists. The detailed cold-season page we could still open is from 2017–2018. July campers need heat and rain layers, plus a sweater for cold classrooms.

Can my child take medicine alone?

Only if you and the camp agree, and the dose is written down. Staff cannot guess. Keep a cabin-bag supply and tell the night adult. This is not medical advice from DragonTrail.

Does the camp provide a SIM card or adapter?

Assume no unless the quote says yes. Wi-Fi is mentioned for Hutong’s school and housing. A phone plan and a plug adapter are still yours to solve.

Will DragonTrail replace something we forget?

No. We do not meet the child or stock a camp store. The organizer and your own delegate in the city are the people who can solve a missing charger.

Compare study routes, or tell us the child’s age, dates, and city. Neither button enrolls a child in a camp.
