Half-Day Chinese Camps
A half-day Chinese camp is a morning or an afternoon of supervised activity, then a named adult collects the child. It is the right shape when nights must stay at home, and it is not a cheaper version of a residential week.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail has no half-day roster. Hutong School’s Beijing page lists half-day starts on 16 June, 30 June, 14 July, and 28 July under copy that still says Camp 2025, and a from-price of 4,250 RMB that is not tied to half-day. Read 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
At a Glance
| The product | A short block plus a handover. The child sleeps in the family’s own arrangement. |
|---|---|
| Who it fits | Younger children, and any child whose parent is already in 北京 or 上海 for the nights. |
| Hutong lines | Half-day is one of five formats on the Beijing page. Date lines have no year printed on them. |
| 2026 day shape | The kids page describes 09:00–12:00 Chinese class, Monday to Friday. That is a half-day length even when the page is selling a longer camp. |
| Price gap | 4,250 RMB per week is not labeled half-day. Do not assume it is the half-day invoice. |
| Not included by default | Airport pickup, hotel nights, and three meals are full-camp sentences on the 2026 page, not half-day sentences. |
| Language | Ask whether the room is 普通话-only. A fun morning in English is a different purchase. |
| Handover | Name the adult, the gate, and the clock time. A late parent is the camp’s problem only if the written rule says so. |
| DragonTrail | We do not staff the gate and we do not price the morning. |
The Handover Defines the Half Day
Half-day is a supervision product with a hard stop. Someone the parent trusts meets the child, and the camp’s duty ends at that meeting unless the contract says otherwise. Families already living in 北京 use this model because the apartment, the dinner, and the night are theirs. Families who are dropping a child and flying home the same day are buying a different risk, even if the morning looks identical. Say which of those you are before you ask about calligraphy.
Hutong’s 2026 kids page describes the teaching block as 09:00 to 12:00, Monday to Friday, focused on speaking. That is three clock hours, not a proven count of taught minutes. Breaks, a late start, and an assembly can shrink it. The page then sends students to lunch and the city, which is no longer a half day. If you only want the morning, say so, and ask whether the 09:00–12:00 block can be bought alone.
What the Beijing Page Lists as Half-Day
The Beijing campus page puts half-day beside full camp, homestay, day camp, and tailor-made. The half-day bullets are 16 June, 30 June, 14 July, and 28 July. The full-camp bullets are only 30 June and 14 July, marked July only. None of those lines print a year, and the page still says Chinese Camp 2025 in the activity text and in the apply heading. A half-day place for next summer is not established by that layout.
Under the list, the page says one week starts from 4,250 RMB per person. Because the sentence sits under every format, it cannot be read as the half-day price. A reseller page we saw itemized other CNY amounts. We are not using those as Hutong’s half-day fee. Email the campus — the page prints beijing@thatsmandarin.com and (+86) 10 8448 9799, at 东城区新中街乙12号 — and ask for the half-day total, the minutes, and the year.
Who the Child Goes Home To
Write the collector’s name into the form, plus a second person if the first is stuck in traffic. Say whether a driver, a grandparent, or a building ayi is allowed to sign the child out. Camps that release a child to “whoever the child waves at” are not acceptable for a primary-school age. If the family uses a driver, the driver needs the same authority as a parent, in writing, and the child needs to know the rule.
A half-day does not register a homestay and it should not need a camp bed. If the family is visiting and the child returns to a hotel, the hotel files the overnight registration under the exit-entry rules for hotel guests. That is the hotel’s job, not a fact the camp can skip if they are also moving the child at 07:30. Tell the camp the hotel name so a sick child has a destination.
Meals and the Hours You Did Not Buy
The dangerous gap is 12:00 to the moment you arrive. If class ends at 12:00 and you arrive at 12:40, those forty minutes need an adult, a room, and a rule about snacks. Hutong’s full-camp copy includes lunch at a local restaurant after class. A half-day family may not want that restaurant trip, and the fee may not include it. Ask whether the child waits in a supervised room or is expected to leave at the bell.
Allergies belong in this conversation even when you pack lunch. A cooking activity or a shared snack is still food. Tell the camp about nuts, dairy, and medicines in the same email as the pickup time. A half-day organizer who says “they will not eat with us” still needs to know what happens if another child shares a bun.
Language Minutes Versus a Morning of Games
Half-day Chinese should say how many minutes are 普通话 with a teacher, and how many are games, songs, or a worksheet while the teacher helps someone else. Hutong’s 2026 page says classes are small-group and tailored, with a focus on speaking for trips around the city. It does not give a class cap on that page. The 2017 multi-city page, which is not this product, capped groups at six and used 50-minute classes. Do not import that cap. Ask this format’s cap and what happens if your child’s level is alone.
A complete beginner can use a short morning. They will not finish a level that a university says takes a nine-week pledge. NYU Shanghai’s USD 8,500 summer is that other product, for enrolled university students. Keep it off the half-day shortlist. If the goal is only comfort with tones before a family trip, say that, so the school does not sell you an excursion package you will not attend.
When Half-Day Is the Wrong Product
Half-day is the wrong product if both parents are in another country, if the child is too young to wait at a gate, or if the learning goal needs four hours and a language pledge. It is also the wrong product if the only reason it looks cheap is that housing, meals, and airport pickup have been removed from the sentence. Compare totals for the life you will actually live, including the helper or parent who must be free at noon.
If the written half-day offer names the year, the minutes, the gate, and the fee, you can judge it. DragonTrail will not judge it for you as a booking. Use Request Guidance to draft the questions, or Find a Suitable Program if the real need is a longer course. The morning itself stays with the school that staffs it.
Rehearse the Morning Before You Pay for a Month
A half-day only works if the noon handover is boring. Before you buy more than a few mornings, walk the route you will actually use. From a hotel near 东直门 the Beijing campus page’s ten-minute walk is plausible. From the other side of 北京 it is a standing commute at the worst hour, and a young child does that commute twice. Ask the school whether a late arrival means the child misses the only taught block of the day. The 09:00 start on the 2026 page is a class, not a rolling drop-in. If your driver cannot make 08:50, the product is the wrong shape even when the from-price of 4,250 RMB looks small. That number, remember, is still not labeled as half-day and still sits on a page that says Camp 2025.
Write the trial into the questions: which gate, which adult wears what, what the child does in the forty minutes if you are late, and whether a single morning can be bought before a full week. A school that has hosted children can answer. A page that only lists 16 June, 30 June, 14 July, and 28 July cannot. Keep university mornings out of this rehearsal. NYU Shanghai’s day is a pledge and a dorm, not a parent at the door at noon, and the USD 8,500 fee is for enrolled university students. DragonTrail will not stand at the gate for you. If the rehearsal shows you cannot be there, switch to a format that includes the night, and read that page’s ratio questions before you change the flights.

FAQ
Is a half-day camp the same as morning class inside a full camp?
Not unless the school says you may buy the morning alone. Hutong’s 2026 page describes 09:00–12:00 class and then lunch and trips for the camp day. A half-day product should end at a handover. Ask which invoice you are on.
Does 4,250 RMB buy a half-day week?
The Beijing page does not say. It prints that from-price once, under several formats, on a page that still says Camp 2025. Ask for a half-day quote with the year on it.
Who is responsible if I am twenty minutes late?
Whoever the written handover rule names. Put a second collector on the form. Do not assume a language school will keep a child into the afternoon because you are in a taxi.
Can a half-day camp get a student visa?
Unlikely to be the point of an X1, and an X2 still needs an admission notice if the consulate wants one. Many families in this model already have a right to be in China. Ask the school what letter, if any, they issue for a morning-only child. DragonTrail does not issue it.
What age is too young for half-day?
The pages we read do not set a half-day minimum. You know whether your child can separate, follow a teacher, and wait for a named adult. A school that will not state a minimum age is not ready for your child.
Are afternoons safer than mornings?
They are a different clock, not a safer product. Heat in July is often worse after lunch. Ask which block they actually run, and what the room is like. 北京 afternoons in July are a planning fact, not a mood.
Does half-day include the Great Wall?
A Great Wall trip does not fit inside a half day with a noon handover. Hutong’s 2026 page lists the Great Wall as a camp trip after class. If you need the child home by lunch, say that those trips are out.
Can DragonTrail meet my child at the gate?
No. We do not provide camp supervision or a daily handover. The collector has to be someone you authorize with the organizer.
