Yuanmingyuan is a ruin garden with lakes. The European stone and the empty foundations are the exhibit. We do not narrate it as a second Summer Palace with the roofs missing.
The park is large and flat in places, uneven in others. Comfortable shoes matter more than a dress code. Summer heat on open ground is the constraint we plan around.
If this is your first imperial garden, the living Summer Palace is usually the better day: corridor, lake, and a hill you can skip. Come to Yuanmingyuan when you already know you want the ruin story.
