Multi-City Mandarin Immersion
Multi-city Mandarin immersion means you study in one city and then another, on purpose. The curriculum may be similar. The life, the room, and the name on your documents may not. This page is about the costs of switching — deposits, lost weeks, and a visa letter that names a single campus — not about a packaged tour of schools.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not run a multi-city language tour and does not move your enrollment between schools. Any switch has to be agreed by the school that holds your fees and by the rules of your stay.

| Why people do it | One city for a first intensive month, another for a later term, or a change of climate and cost. |
|---|---|
| LTL cities | Their China index lists Beijing, Shanghai, Chengde, Chengdu, Beihai, Xi’an, Kunming, plus Taipei and Singapore. Length is 1–52 weeks. You choose. |
| Same format, other city | That’s Mandarin sells the same intensive group in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Chengdu. |
| Discounts | LTL prints city tags such as Chengdu 20 percent, Beihai 40 percent, Xi’an 20 percent. Theirs, on that page, not a DragonTrail rate. |
| Housing | A move usually forfeits a homestay arrangement and starts a new one. Ask about notice and refunds. |
| Documents | A letter for one campus is a weak fit for a course in another. Ask before you switch. |
| Lost time | Travel days are not class days. A weekend move is optimistic if you must check out and sit a new placement. |
| Not a tour | Three cities in three weeks is a holiday with classrooms attached. See the holiday page. |
| DragonTrail | No hopper ticket between schools. |
Reasons to Change City, and Reasons Not To
A second city makes sense after you know what the first one failed to give you. Shanghai’s English, which schools themselves flag as both comfort and risk, might be why your Mandarin stalled. Chengde, in LTL’s words, is their immersion setting. Guilin is CLI’s argument for a city where daily life stays in Chinese. You might also leave because of weather, a partner’s job, or a university semester that starts elsewhere. Those are real reasons. “I want to see several places” is a travel reason. Honor it by traveling between courses, not by calling a ten-day hop an immersion.
That’s Mandarin’s intensive product is the cleanest comparison: same twenty-class week, same cap of six, five mainland cities. They do not, on the page we read, say the cities are interchangeable in housing or in visa letters. LTL’s index encourages you to pick among cities and even to study for up to 52 weeks. Picking is not the same as stacking three campuses into one visa story.
What a Move Costs
Housing is the expensive surprise. LTL’s Beijing homestay, en suite, and studio are weekly prices for that city. Another city on their list has another tag, including the discount labels on the index. You will not carry a Beijing homestay to Beihai. That’s Mandarin’s homestay and apartments are arranged for their students and aimed at stays of about four weeks. Leave in week three and you may be inside a minimum you already paid. CLI says that once an apartment lease is signed through them the rent is not refunded, and that apartments start at six months. A multi-city plan that includes a six-month lease is not a multi-city plan. It is a one-city plan with a trip.
Trains and a lost Monday add up. High-speed trains between the big campuses are a few hours, not a free afternoon. If your intensive class is every morning, you travel on a weekend and you arrive tired. Budget a placement test in the new city even inside the same school. Levels are not always honored automatically.
Papers Have a City on Them
Ask, before the first payment, whether a switch of campus requires a new letter. CLI’s visa explanation is tied to study at their program and, for X1, to Guangxi Normal University in Guangxi. You cannot treat that letter as a national pass to study in Shanghai next month. LTL says it does not process student visas and that the papers it can give after payment support a short-term tourist visa if you need one. A tourist status that was already a compromise does not become simpler when you change hotels and schools. That’s Mandarin says it provides student-visa materials for its courses. Ask whether those materials name one city.
Registration of residence, when it applies to your status, follows the address. Moving without telling the school is how small problems become exit problems. This page is not a registration manual. It is a warning to ask the school that knows your status.
Same School, Two Cities
Staying inside one school is simpler than leaving LTL for That’s Mandarin for CLI. The level names might transfer. The tuition you already paid might not. Get the transfer rule: how many weeks’ notice, whether the discounted city price applies if you started in a full-price city, and whether the intensive start dates in the new city (That’s Mandarin publishes a 2026 list) have a seat at your level. A discount of 40 percent in Beihai, as LTL prints it, is not a reason to abandon a teacher who is working, unless the money and the immersion both matter more than continuity.
Taipei and Singapore appear on LTL’s index and sit outside mainland visa rules. A “multi-city China” plan that adds them is an international move. Do not fold them into a mainland letter. Traditional characters in Taipei are a script change, not a weekend dialect shift.
Who Should Stay Put
Beginners usually should stay. The first month is tones and a teacher’s ear. A new city resets the homestay and the courage you just built. Intermediate learners gain more from a second city once daily tasks are easy, because the new accent and the new street are practice rather than panic. Advanced learners move for a library, a university term, or a job, not for variety. Heritage speakers should not add cities to avoid the reading work. The reading will not happen on a train.
Families should be especially skeptical. Each move multiplies beds and school-age logistics. The family page is the constraint. A couple with two intensive seats should not assume both levels are open in the next city in the same week.
Plan One Switch, Not a Trail
Choose city A for a defined number of weeks, with housing that matches those weeks. Write the question about city B into the first email, before you need the answer. If the school cannot explain the letter and the refund, stay in city A or book city B as a separate trip after you go home. Three cities in a month is a holiday. Buy it as a holiday if that is what you want.
Request Guidance with the two city names and the weeks if you want help seeing whether the paperwork story is coherent. We will not book the train or the second school. Find a Suitable Program if one of the stops is actually a university term.
Move the Body Only After the Paper Still Matches
LTL’s China index is the clearest multi-city list in this batch: Beijing, Shanghai, Chengde, Chengdu, Beihai, Xi’an, Kunming, plus Taipei and Singapore. Discount tags on Chengdu, Beihai, and Xi’an are LTL’s own. The page also says you can study from one to 52 weeks. It does not say a single acceptance letter covers a tour of those cities. That’s Mandarin’s intensive campuses are Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Chengdu. CLI’s detailed tuition is Guilin. Changing city can mean a new room, a new deposit, and a visa document that still names the first campus. Ask which city is printed on the letter before you buy the second train ticket.
Housing does not travel with you. LTL prices Beijing homestay, en suite, and studio separately from tuition. That’s Mandarin’s apartments start around four weeks and hotels around two or three. A one-week stop in a second city may fall into the hotel line, not the homestay line. CLI says extra nights beyond the course are 150 RMB if you extend, and that figure is Guilin, not a national rate. Budget the gap between courses as your own hotel, not as a free night inside tuition.
Chengde is the city LTL singles out for immersion, and Beihai and Xi’an carry discount tags. Those are reasons to read the city page, not reasons to assume the same weekly price as Beijing. Taipei uses traditional characters. Keep the mainland visa conversation off that leg. Each city (城市) needs its own room quote. DragonTrail does not operate a multi-city circuit and does not hold rooms in more than one city for you.

FAQ
Can I study in several cities on one DragonTrail booking?
No. We do not sell that booking. A school may let you move between its campuses under its rules. That agreement is with them, and it is not automatic.
Is the course the same in every city?
That’s Mandarin sells one intensive format across five cities: twenty classes, cap of six. LTL lists many cities with different prices and different discount tags. Housing and after-class life change even when the morning looks the same. Ask about the letter and the room, not only the textbook.
Will I lose money if I leave a homestay early?
Often, yes. Minimum stays of about four weeks appear on That’s Mandarin’s housing page. CLI says apartment rent they sign is non-refundable. Get the rule for your building before you promise yourself a second city.
Do city discounts apply if I switch?
Only if that school says so. LTL’s percentage tags are printed on their city index for those cities’ products. A tag is not a coupon you carry from Beijing to Beihai in your pocket unless they apply it.
Can my visa letter move with me?
Assume no until the school says yes. Letters name an institution and usually a city. CLI’s X1 discussion is tied to a named university. Do not travel to a new campus on a letter for the old one without asking.
Is a weekend in another city “multi-city immersion”?
No. That is a trip. Immersion here means a study block long enough to have housing and a timetable. See the holiday page for short stays.
Should beginners change city after two weeks?
Usually no. You will spend the second fortnight relearning the walk to class. Finish a level or a month, then move if you still want to.
Does DragonTrail recommend a best sequence of cities?
No. We will not rank a trail. Tell us what failed in the first city — English everywhere, cost, climate, a university start date — and the second choice gets clearer. Variety alone is a weak reason.
