Architecture and Heritage Field Study
Architecture and heritage field study in China, on the pages opened on 29 October 2026, is not a degree and not a conservation practicum. The closest named class is CET’s urban elective, and a site visit stays a request until a host confirms access.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
We did not open Tongji, and SH/URBN 353 is not an architecture degree. A mention of field learning, including Xintiandi as an example, is not a licence and not a confirmed visit. DragonTrail enrolls nobody.

| Who this is for | A reader who wants fieldwork in 建筑 or heritage and needs to know what was actually printed. The answer is one urban elective, not a studio degree. |
|---|---|
| Class we can name | SH/URBN 353, Globalization and the Chinese City, is a CET Shanghai elective. It is 3 credits, taught in English, and not offered every term. |
| Not Tongji | Tongji was not opened. No architecture faculty, studio sequence, or Tongji fee is quoted. CET’s elective does not become Tongji because both sit in Shanghai. |
| Xintiandi | CET’s page mentions field learning such as Xintiandi. That is an example on a course description. It is not a conservation practicum and not a visit we can schedule. |
| Access | A site visit is requested until a host confirms the day, the room, and who may enter. This page does not hold a gate key or a heritage pass. |
| No licence | No conservation licence is implied. A classroom course does not authorize you to measure, alter, or document a protected building for a client. |
| Housing | CET houses students with a local roommate, 2 per room, at 东华大学. That roommate is not a field permit and not a heritage introduction. |
| Money | The semester that contains the urban elective is USD 19,690. That figure is CET’s tuition and housing. It is not an architecture studio fee. |
| What we do not do | DragonTrail enrolls nobody, does not confirm site access, and does not turn a ceramics room in Shanghai into a heritage studio. The visit stays a request. |
An Urban Elective Is Not a Degree
Architecture, on the page we can cite, is one urban elective inside a semester. SH/URBN 353 is titled Globalization and the Chinese City. CET prints it as 3 credits, taught in English, and not offered every term. The host university on that semester page is 东华大学. A course about the city is not a professional architecture degree, not a design studio sequence, and not a heritage qualification. DragonTrail does not teach it and does not enroll you. The title of this page names the interest. It does not name a credential we found.
Other electives on the same CET list keep the boundary visible. Cinema, Shanghai history, food and identity, and literature today are also 3-credit English-taught choices, and they are also not offered every term. None of them is an architecture major. Politics and foreign policy are named as areas on the page we read, without course codes we are willing to invent. An internship elective of 120 hours needs proof of university enrollment for the whole term. The page does not say those hours are spent in an architecture office or on a conservation site.
- SH/URBN 353 is a 3-credit city course, not an architecture degree.
- The 120-hour internship is not described as an architecture office.
Tongji Was Not Opened
Tongji stayed unopened on 29 October 2026, so this page has no Tongji major, no Tongji calendar, and no Tongji fee. Sharing a city with a famous architecture university does not enroll a visitor there. CET’s host, as printed, is 东华大学. Those are different institutions. We will not write a sentence that slides a student from one name to the other. If you need Tongji’s own rules, those rules live on Tongji’s own pages, which were not the pages we read.
LTL’s Beijing add-on list, read for a building course, names pottery, calligraphy, cooking, tai chi, kung fu, Beijing opera, a tea house, badminton, and ping pong. Architecture is not among them. The sample week varies. An outing on a language timetable is not a measured survey and not a heritage studio. Beijing opera on that list is a language-week extra, not a conservation class. We do not stretch a sample hour into fieldwork because the hour happens in a city with historic streets.
- No Tongji intake is quoted, because that university’s pages were not opened.
- LTL’s add-ons do not name architecture, and a sample week is not a survey.
Xintiandi Is an Example, Not a Practicum
Xintiandi shows up as an example of field learning on the urban elective, not as a practicum you can book from this page. CET’s wording, as we are using it, points at the kind of outing the course may include. An example is not a conserved site handed to students, not a drawing assignment we can describe, and not a day we can put on a calendar. A site visit remains a request until the host that controls access confirms the day, the room, and who may enter. DragonTrail cannot confirm that access.
A conservation licence is not hiding inside that example. Nothing we opened says a visitor may record a protected structure, take samples, or advise on repairs. Coursework, if the elective runs, is CET’s coursework under CET’s rules. It is not a professional appointment. Past traveling-seminar cohorts visited Xi’an, Guizhou, and Yunnan. Those are past cohorts, not this term’s heritage route, and not a licence to work on buildings in those cities. We will not turn a city name from an old seminar into a field school.
- Xintiandi on the course page is an example, not a visit this page can schedule.
- Past Xi’an, Guizhou, and Yunnan cohorts are not a heritage itinerary.
A Site Visit Stays a Request
Entry to a lane, a museum store, or a work site is controlled by someone else. Until that host writes back, the visit is only a request. This page does not list open days, because no architecture host printed them for us. CET’s fall arrival of 26 August 2026 had already passed on 29 October 2026. Spring arrival is printed as 17 February 2027, and the printed deadline of 1 November had not yet passed on the read date. Those dates belong to the semester. They are not a roster of building visits, and CET says its fees can change without notice.
Housing during that semester is a local roommate, 2 per room. The roommate is not a field permit, not a resident expert, and not an introduction to a family courtyard or a heritage office. Standing in a public street with a notebook is not the same as being admitted to a site. Where you may stand, whether you may measure, and whether you may publish drawings are questions for the host. We do not answer them by guessing, and we do not treat a credit term as permission.
- Semester dates are not a schedule of architecture visits.
- A local roommate is housing, not a permit to enter a heritage site.
A Shanghai Ceramics Room Is Not a Studio Degree
PWS, 乐天陶社, has a Shanghai workshop as well as the Jingdezhen residency. The Shanghai workshop inbox is not the Jingdezhen inbox. Both belong to a ceramics host. A residency longer than two weeks is 3,300 RMB a week, and a shorter stay is 3,800 RMB a week, for a self-led studio. That studio is clay, including 青花, not an architecture faculty and not a conservation lab. Workshops are a separate page: three hours, no set schedule, English translation, and prices described as estimates that change on 1 November. We read them on 29 October.
The contrast matters because a practical room with a printed price is easy to misfile under design. Ceramic work does not become heritage fieldwork because the room is in Shanghai, and it does not become Tongji because the city matches. No conservation licence attaches to a kiln week. If you want that week, you are reading a pottery host’s terms, which this page only cites so they are not confused with 建筑. The urban elective and the clay week remain two products, with two hosts, and neither one was opened as an architecture degree.
- Jingdezhen residency fees are ceramics fees, not architecture tuition.
- Shanghai workshop mail and Jingdezhen mail are different inboxes at a clay host.
How to Read the Semester Figures
CET prints USD 19,690 for the Shanghai semester. The page splits it into USD 15,752 tuition and USD 3,938 housing. CET’s further estimates are airfare of USD 1,500 to 2,000, meals of USD 2,725, and personal expenses of USD 600. Those numbers describe the term at 东华大学. They do not describe site tickets, drawing materials, or a conservation tutor. A recommended GPA of 3.0, age 18 or older, and a US college are CET’s notes for that term. A transcript is joint with CET and 东华大学, or uses the University of Minnesota as school of record. It records CET courses, not a professional architecture registration.
Questions worth asking are about entry and about the elective actually running. Name the month, the city you can live in, and whether you need credit. Say if teaching must be in English. Ask which host would have to confirm a building, and do not assume Xintiandi is booked. Do not send site drawings for DragonTrail to approve. The links here open a program explainer and a stay plan. They do not submit you to CET, to Tongji, or to PWS. DragonTrail enrolls nobody, and a blank access cell stays blank until the host who controls the place writes the permission down.
- USD 19,690 is the semester total on CET’s page, not a heritage studio invoice.
- Ask which host confirms entry before you treat an example site as a visit.

FAQ
Is SH/URBN 353 an architecture degree?
No. It is CET’s elective Globalization and the Chinese City, 3 credits, taught in English, and not offered every term, at a semester hosted by 东华大学. A city course is not a professional architecture degree and not a studio sequence.
Did you open Tongji’s architecture pages?
No. Tongji was not opened on 29 October 2026. This page does not quote Tongji majors, fees, or intake. Studying an urban elective through CET does not place you at Tongji, and DragonTrail enrolls you in neither.
Is Xintiandi a conservation practicum?
No. CET’s urban elective mentions field learning such as Xintiandi as an example. An example on a course page is not a practicum, not a conservation licence, and not a visit this page can put on a calendar. Access stays a request until a host confirms it.
Can DragonTrail confirm entry to a heritage site?
No. A site visit is requested until the host that controls the place confirms the day, the room, and who may enter. We do not hold that confirmation. Semester housing with a roommate is not a field permit.
Does the CET roommate introduce heritage contacts?
No. The roommate is housing, 2 per room, on CET’s semester at 东华大学. The page does not describe the roommate as a heritage introduction, a resident expert, or permission to enter a courtyard, an archive, or a work site.
Is the Shanghai pottery workshop an architecture studio?
No. PWS is a ceramics host. The Shanghai workshop inbox differs from the Jingdezhen residency inbox, and the residency figures are weekly clay-studio rates. Three-hour workshops are not a conservation lab and not Tongji.
Which fee is the architecture fee?
There isn’t a separate architecture fee on the pages we opened. CET’s USD 19,690 is the semester, split into tuition and housing on CET’s page. PWS’s 3,300 or 3,800 RMB weeks are ceramics. Neither number is a conservation-studio invoice.
What should I ask if I want a real site visit?
Ask which host controls the building, whether the urban elective is running that term, and whether entry is confirmed in writing. Tell us the city and the month. Do not send drawings for us to approve. DragonTrail does not enroll you and does not open the gate.
